Unfortunately for Ottawa they have used that excuse a lot and while he has taken less money at times there, many others got their money.

The guy played for 1mil last year, he gave the team a break

He had 59 points the year prior... that put him top 60 in scoring, ie: a more than capable top-6 player. Ahead of Bobby Ryan, Ryan Getzlaf, Jonathan Toews, Johan Franzen, Alex Semin and others, tied with Rick Nash, 1 point back of Corey Perry, 6 points back of Alex Ovechkin, Patrick Kane, etc.

The reason he got only 1 mil last year was because his contract was front end loaded, & he was grossly overpaid in those years.

No. It's actually because they didn't think he'd play that long

The situation is one of the questions I always had about the front loaded contracts. Why did so many guys (high caliber guys) think that they would want to quit playing hockey at a certain age (when they were a lot younger) or that they would want to play at $1M. Guys play longer in their careers and part of personal value is always going to depend upon salary.

Plans change. Guys think they have it all planned out and then they realize that maybe they are feeling a lot better than they thought they would be at 40.

Exactly. Look at Selanne. He's said he never thought there'd be any chance he'd be able to play into his 40s

Souray is out 4 to 6 months after tearing a ligament in one of his wrists.

In response the Ducks signed Mark Fistric. One year, 900K.

Great, you just know that Mark is going to be looking at punishing our guys and sending Oilers management a message.

Souray out 4-6 months...

@JoeYerdonPHT
Probably not coincidentally, the Ducks announce they've signed Mark Fistric to a one-year deal

Glad to see Fistric get work somewhere, I liked him as an Oiler and wouldn't have minded him as a depth signing.

Edit: ^^^ beat me to it

"Alfredsson revealed he and the Senators structured his last contract under the mutual assumption that he would retire before playing the last year for $1 million"

Not saying we could have gotten Fistric at that dollar figure, but is Ference @ $3.25M that big of an upgrade over Fistric at $.9M?

Yes. Fistric was in and out of our lineup all last season and while he was physical, he wasn't that good. Ference brings everything you need in a second pairing guy and 'intangibles'. He knows what it takes to win and should really help mentor our younger guys.

Fistric is a 6/7 defenceman and Ference was a top 4 defenceman on a team that made the finals so yes, it is that big of an upgrade.

That is what I am saying, it never was a good option to take the $1M because it doesn't consider changing plans and it mostly helped the owners.

Structured it that way, because he got paid more at the start. To lower the cap hit. You're both right, but you're bickering, ha ha.

I hope Fistric doesn't go back to his old ways and rock our kids too hard. I would have been more happy with him in the Eastern conference.

He should be looking to punish every one he sees, that is his only chance at staying in the NHL.

No. They negotiated the deal, and then after they had one both sides agreed on, management asked to throw on another year to lower the cap hit. There's a difference.

Really OT, but they're looking for a replacement for Cloutier on hockeybuzz. Any takers?

He land 5 punishing hits a game, but it won't matter if the other team scores because of his hit taking him out of position. He really needed to go to a team with a vet defense core. In ANA, they already have to worry about Sbisa, Fowler and whoever else makes the team. Now add Fistric to the mix and Beauchmin/Allen have a lot of baby sitting to do. Even Allen didn't exactly play his best last year, better hope he doesn't have another off year.

I think what's telling is they didn't sign Lydman, that must be it for him now.
