I could really see him succeed in FEL. He is still talented goalie and young as goalie. I really could see him going to be poor man's Tim Thomas and playing awesome season or two in Europe and going back to NHL.

Thought he'd retire for sure with all the injury issues at his age. Just will not give up. Good for him, he's a punch line on the bruins board for the 2010 collapse but he barely played & it's not his fault that krejci got hurt & the bruins had no depth that season

Weird, third time this summer that a RFA has re-signed with his team on an AHL deal, after Tom McCollum and Dan Kelly. At least this one is for a reason, though.

Updated HB blog. Per Paul Holmgren, Eric Wellwood signed an AHL contract "for the time being" as he recovers from his leg tendon injuries.

NJD is close to the 50 NHL contract limit.

Henrique will be 49 when he signs although Matteau and Severson might slide.

Kelly is not likely to get a call up to the NHL, so that may be the reason for Kelly getting an AHL deal.

With the surplus D in Albany I think there is still room for UFA veteran D Captain Jay Leach whether it be an NHL contract or an AHL contract.

I should clarify, I don't think it's weird that teams like the Devils, Wings, or Flyers would make use of it, it makes perfect sense when dealing with the contract limit to put a guy on an AHL deal, basically stash him in the AHL without losing his rights and see how he develops (or recovers in Wellwood's case).

What I think is weird is why would you sign that deal if you were the RFA in question? Like, why wouldn't McCollum (Knowing, at best, he's the #4 goalie for Detroit next year), Kelly (Probably has 4-5 guys ahead of him at the AHL level ahead of him for a recall), or Wellwood (Having no leverage coming off a serious tendon injury) just accept the Qualifying Offer that was extended to them in June? Unless the teams in question are offering them a really high AHL-level deal, why wouldn't you accept the NHL deal so that, if the team needs a warm body in a hurry, you'd be eligible to be recalled?
