He can't be slower than Hal Gill ( ) and he's surely tougher.

He could barely cut it on the top line playing with Boyle two years ago. I don't think he can cut it now. He might be OK as a third pairing D with a mobile partner, and maybe some PK time.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is the slowest guy in the league.

If Murray's taken his conditioning seriously this summer and is back to where he was before the lockout, this could be an absolute steal for the Habs at 1.5mil. If he plays like he did this year, he'll still be a big plus for the Habs, he brings exactly what we need and we have no shortage of mobile defenceman to pair him with. I'd expect something in-between. His performance next year may warrant a trade or further movement but, I'm assuming this is just shoring up the defence with a veteran, bottom-pairing, shut-down defenceman.

No he is slower, but he is a tank and knows his limits.

If anything, this worries me that Emelin will be out longer than first expected.

Seems like the perfect fit. Montreal could use more hitters, so Murray may be exactly what they need.

They needed a crease clearer and got one for 1.5 million. People who think this is a bad move need to realize you don't go out in FA and sign star defenseman with size, just doesn't happen. You draft them, and fill in the bottom pairings the best you can to fit the need for your club. This move does that for MTL.

Glad Murray got a job somewhere.

And don't worry too much about his NHL career ending, the guy is one of the smartest players in hockey and holds patents on various inventions (mostly pertaining to beer dispensing).

Chara and Suter in the last how many years? Also, you have to take into consideration along with the rarity of it the fact that there are numerous other teams sticking their toes in the water or going hard after him.

A couple players doesn't change the fact that the best way to build a defense is through the draft and complimenting those players the best you can with FA and trade.

+1 -- he doesn't lack effort and is very intelligent on the ice. His biggest flaws are that he is slow and can sometimes sacrifice positioning to go for a big hit. Very good on a 5-on-3 kill and will block a lot of shots; no problem sacrificing his body. Good luck, Douglas.

If they have a mobile D to put him with and keep him away from fast forwards who change directions a lot, he's still an asset at that price. Just have to be specific about his matchups.

Not a bad signing at that price, but I don't think Murray is an everyday player at this point. Good skating teams will be able to victimize him on a regular basis, he simply doesn't have the foot speed to keep up.

Against the Isles he was basically good on the pk but a liability in every other facet (except for a couple of fluky goals).

Hefty price, but only for a year, decent deal for Montreal.

Yes, he loved to take off his helmet (visor) and then go at it with the long hair flowing-- the problem is finding people who want to take him on. Dude is a monster.

It could turn out well paired with Diaz, a smallish but mobile offensive defenseman. I like this signing since it won't be hard to bench him if he sucks.

perfect then! if other teams stop taking liberties on our players, he's well worth the price.

I'm cool with this move. Montreal needed more physicality from the back end to complement all our swift skating D. If he can still land hits and clear the crease in a limited role then it's a great signing. If he can do that some of the time it's still good. Pairing him with a fast guy won't be a problem.
