If you're talking about the capgeek numbers, they already do not include bonus money in their calculation of cap space.

1- cap drop

2- the league is top heavy. Pay for stars. Fill with filler. Young and cheap.

3- cap space increases as season goes on(i think it still does like it used to). So saving 3 mil in cap space for half a season means you can grab a guy at 6 mil halfway through. That 6 mil guy might put you over the top.

4- less perrenial winners. Instead, build and boom. Build and boom. With cap, you need stuff to go right in order to make a run. Might as well let the season progress, then go for boom if you think you have a chance.

5- theres no incentive to spend more unless you know you have a chance. Id rather be a gm that wins one championship every 15 years, but makes money every year holding back cash... rather than a gm that overspends every year and maybe winning 2 cups in 15 years but losing money.

But they don't have "bonus cushion remaining" either.

the cream has been scooped. all that is left are players that over-value themselves.

The cap has nothing to do with the fact that teams generally don't sign free agents at the end of August, aside from depth signings of very little interest. Most of the lineups are already done and the teams should be preparing the season.

This time of year's usually quiet anyway. I bet when training camp opens you'll see a rash of signings.

I don't expect to see any more signings until training camp, like others have said.

I have a gut feeling that the Devils invite Brad Boyes to camp.

There is some talent and veterans left but no one that I would consider a must have. If someone like Horton was still around then I would be suprised. Most of the guys left are probably asking too much and will have to settle for plug contracts as teams fill vacancies during camp. I am maybe a little suprised Brunner is not signed yet it sounded like he was lining up for new jersey and then Jagr signed so maybe that played a role and stole their focus. Brunner might be making demands that are turning teams off like garunteed top line and PP minutes and a top 6 contract after only one season that left some question marks. I wish he would have been more patient and gave the wings another season. I think most of the free agents left have question marks like these and enough of a checkered past that they are not necessarily being chased after

I beg to differ
Brunner, Cleary, Bryz, Tim Thomas, Ian White, Ryan Whitney, Morrow, Colaiacovo, Gagne, Prospal, Boyes, Raymond, Theodore is more impressive than we normally see at this time of year
even guys like Gillies, LaRose, Wellwood, Gilbert, Gill, Steckel, Redden, Dvorak, Connolly, Kuba, Aucoin, Poti, Hainsey all still have a chance of finding teams

yes, the end of August is always slow regardless, but there are still a decent amount of talent left

ok then.
You'll have to forgive some of the fans who have never had an every-year contending team...they won't have the experience to know why you should leave a mil or two under the cap. Of course the reason is to have enough to fit the pro-rated salary of a vet rental at the deadline to plug an injury hole (or to replace a seriously underperforming player or a hole that was missing that no one stepped up to) heading in to the all-important playoff run.

My guess is Raymond to the islanders or flames for 2.5 mil per year

I'll humbly admit that I don't get your point.

Signing bonuses are counted against the cap, not the bonus cushion.

You can't give performance bonuses to everyone: ELC, 35+ and players coming back after missing serious time because of an injury.

This doesn't make any sense, why do you care if an owner makes money or not, is it your money? Every fan should take 2 Cups in 15 years over 1 Cup in 15 years.
