Rebirth of the Mets in 2015; World Series in 2016.

Right on schedule.

If they didn't get enough in return for Byrd at the deadline, is it fair to speculate the Mets are getting good pieces?

An article I read from July I think said the prospect Dilson Herrera who's coming to the Mets from Pittsburgh was ranked as the Pirates 20th best prospect.

Strange. Did Mets management still think they were contenders with Harvey at the deadline?

I think they were maintaining that teams weren't offering enough to warrant dealing Byrd and not field the best possible team. My guess is the Pirates upped the ante by including something the Mets wanted. The Pirates were sorely lacking in RF production so I don't think the timing of this move has anything to do with what transpired yesterday. The only Harvey-related aspect is feeling freed up to move Buck.

Panic!!!!

Do you even know what they got back? What does keeping John Buck and/or Marlon Byrd do for the team THIS YEAR? They can easily sign both of them this winter.

We're all upset by what happened yesterday, but don't let that keep you looking at tbis clearly.

Its a waiver trade, we got "a minor leaguer and a PTBNL"

Theres no way we got anyone useful in a waiver trade. We are doing the Pirates a favor, and losing our current best hitter in the process. Whats the point?

The team should have been looking into re-signing Byrd, which will be more difficult now. Oh well, just another hole to fill!!

If we lose Byrd and sign an OF to replace him, what does that do to improve the team? Its just status quo.

You're making a mountain out of a molehill.

They have been adamant about not dealing Byrd unless they got offered a piece back that they wanted. Why would have those demands have changed since the deadline? What's more likely, they "gave away Byrd" (and paid the Pirates to take him) or the Pirates came back with something the Mets wanted because they have been getting nothing from the RF position?

Wright, Harvey, and Parnell were all healthy and they were playing good ball when they didn't deal Byrd. That's all changed now so they probably just figured they won't be a good team the rest of the way and decided to cash in on Byrd now instead of wasting him for a month.

I disagree. They weren't challenging for the playoffs at the deadline no matter how well Wright, Harvey and Parnell were doing.

They weren't but they wanted to field the best team possible the rest of the way to finish strong and have something to build off of for 2014. That's what it seemed like they were doing unless someone came along with an offer that blew them away for Byrd. That's the impression I get since the package they got for Byrd wasn't exactly overwhelming.

I just don't understand the reason for the trade. Its out now they got some A Ball 2B Dilson Herrera. I'd much rather keep Byrd here and try to convince him to resign than to do the Pirates a solid.

You don't know what teams were offering for Byrd at the deadline. You don't know what the Mets were looking for at the deadline. You don't know what the Mets think about Herrera. You don't know who the player to named later is. You don't know if this is an overwhelming offer or not.

The fact is they're not going anywhere this season with or without Harvey. They got a very young prospect who fills a need as the Mets are weak with middle infielders. For a guy who they sign this offseason if they want.

How does this move do anything to improve or hurt their chances to sign Byrd?

I would think being traded for scraps makes him feel not wanted.

Hey, you don't have to tell me. I really have no issue with the trade since I didn't see Byrd or Buck coming back next year anyway and the rest of the year is a waste anyway.

The Mets revived his career and then traded him to a team that's going to the playoffs. How dare they! Give the Governor a "harrumph"

As I tweeted, I really shouldn't have an issue with it either because I don't even want the team to play the rest of the season, or the network to even air the games.

I just don't understand why we decided to help the Pirates. They gunna return the favor in a couple years?

You've decided what they got is scraps. The piece we do know is a kid who isn't even 20. This is not a journeyman minor leaguer (a al Chris Carter). It's a kid who addresses an organizational shallow position and has upside.

We don't know who the PTNL is.

Oh, and they could very well sign Byrd this winter.
