Shogi gives nitemare to Swedes. But our defense is mobile now. And dare not make any mistake because of Henrik Lundqvist.

Based on the preliminary roster I would say it could be something like this: (it is allowed to register a 25-man roster in Sochi, right?)

13 FW
Perezhogin-Malkin-Popov/Kulemin
Kovalchuk-Datsyuk-Radulov
Ovechkin-Anisimov-Semin
Kokarev-Tereschenko-Kulemin/Popov
Kuznetsov

9 D (won't even try to guess the pairings here, just a list)
Voynov
Markov
Emelin (if healthy)
Nikulin
Medvedev
Ryasenskiy
Tyutin
Gonchar (probably Bill called him up to the camp not just to say "Hello")
Denisov

3 G

Varlamov
Bobrovsky
Barulin/Nabokov (for Nabokov it is the same guess as for Gonchar)

Yakupov isn't any good on the left. 3rd line center is Terescenko, not Anisimov. And your 4th line is no 4th line.

I'm pretty sure that if Kulikov improves his play in the fall he'll be on the team.

I think a lot will depend on Tihonov, Tarasenko and Kuznetsov's fall performances. I am also not a big fan of Tereschenko. He's got a ton of experience, but getting up there in age and can break down under pressure.

Anyone know why Alexander Yeryomenko didn't have invitation to the evaluation camp ? He is the last playoff MVP, two straight title of KHL goalie of the year. Is there something between him and the Russian Hockey Federation ?

There is no conspiracy. He just never was good enough on the national team and now he's an aging goaltender on a team that plays the most organized defensive system in the league. A lot of his success comes from it. He also is only playoff MVP because Dynamo is a no-stars-scoring-by-comitee-defending-with-6-men team. You couldn't give the award to any single player actually.

Having watched the 2 of them over the last two NHL seasons, I'd have to say Tyutin is much better than Nikitin. Tyutin gets little fan fair, but is strong in all aspects of the game. Nik has a heavy shot, but is deficient to Tyutin in all other areas imo.

IMO

Ovechkin Datsyuk Semin
Kovalchuk Malkin Tarasenko
Radulov Zinoviev Morozov
Nichushkin Kuznetsov Yakupov

A.Markov - Emelin
Voynov - Kulikov
Volchenkov - Nikulin

Varlamov, Barulin, Bobrovsky, Nabokov

Here I think Bill will take K. Petrov, Tikhonov, Perezhogin, Popov

I find it rather funny how Bill changed his opinion about Gonchar and Markov: if couple of years ago he was more like 'they're too old for Sochi', then now he talks about them more as about experienced and proven players. Probably NT's defensive performance at the last WC made him think about it one more time.

Both Markov and Gonchar performed well las season. Not mentioning that Markov was out almost full season a couple seasons ago

What are the odds of Krill Petrov making this team?

I'd welcome Markov, but Gonchar had defensive problems on big ice during the lockout.

Petrov is big and strong though, we could use his physical presence. But probably not on the larger ice rink.

Why wasn't Mozyakin invited? Because of his bad WC perfomance?

He's no good when playing for the NT.

What I think the lines ought to look like:

Ovechkin - Malkin - Semin
Kovalchuk - Datsyuk - Radulov
Perezhogin - Tereschenko - Popov
Kokarev - Anisimov - Kulemin

If the lines don't work out on the big ice, swap Malkin and Datsyuk.

Nikitin? He was an average in KHL. Shows nothing in 2012 WC. NHL is not the magic word anymore. You can not fool anybody with it.

Was interested to see if you guys thought Yakupov would make it. Seems near 50/50 at this point.

I am thinking that Russia will take a KHL vet over Yak, but we will see.
