Season expectations for Craig Smith

I saw Smith conversations in another thread and thought its own thread was a good idea.

In my opinion, he has obviously struggled and has drifted down the depth chart. However, I'm really interested in seeing how he performs with a full camp and season. In addition, maybe being surrounded by some grit (offseason acquisitions) may give the kid the confidence he needs. He better make this season count, though, as I'd imagine this is his last chance.

Neither Fisher nor Legwand will be on the wing, I'll bet on that one.

I think Smith's path has looked a lot like Erat's.

Erat's first year he scored 33 points, fell off the second year and was actually demoted. Ended up with 27 games played and only 8 points.

Smith's first year 36 points, he's second year he fell off not as much as Erat but still not what we expected.

I wouldn't be shocked if he produced 45-50 points this season, if he's at wing.

My best guess is that he plays and by New Years has 11 points 3 goals and 8 assists. The team is just bumfuzzled he is waived or clears waivers to hit Milwaukee in Jan. Preds pay him 2 mil to play there the reaminder of the season and the next.

24 points, and a healthy dose of the press box.

my bets are on seeing a bunch of missed empty nets and me yelling at a newly bought 55 inch led because smith stinks up the joint...

If Craig Smith scores 45-50 points this season, Nashville will be in contention for the division title.

Unless something lights a fire under him, I don't see him scoring but maybe 20-25 points

Did it shock you when Erat followed his 8 point second season with a 49 point third season? It did me, but that was the basis of my reasoning.

Part of my logic is I only see Smith playing a half season at most. As far as did it shock me, no, only because I was in Jr High at the time and didn't follow the Preds as we didn't have cable at the time and I was never taken to a game. I didn't go to my first game until College.

That's fair.

I think Beck is the better hockey player between the two so I want Smith and Spaling gone, but I think Smith takes a bit of some unfair beatings here.

My problem with Smith is he is on the wrong team for his development. Trotz is never going to trust him fully. Smith needs to play center, but he never will under Trotz. On top of this, he seems to be one of the first to feel the wrath of Trotz should something go wrong no matter what goes wrong. It seems like if Legwand, Fisher, etc is responsible for a turnover, Smith gets the blame even if he wasn't even on ice. This also just seems to get worse as time goes on and it is doing nothing but sending him into a downward spiral.

For the record, that's the same way he treated both Legwand and Erat, and even Wilson to an extent.

Maybe so, but it just seems like Smith is just in a downward spiral that I do not see him getting out of as long as he is here. IMO, the longer he is here, the more detrimental it will be to him. If he is not traded, I don't see him in the NHL in 5 years.

Wow, you're overreacting here man. He was a rookie two years ago, and has since had one cluster*** shortened season with practically no camp to develop. I think, with his skill set, 40-50 points could be reachable this year. He needs to get stronger and better at making decisions with the puck at game speed, but those are pretty common problems with young players.

I don't agree with the sentiment that Trotz stalls offensive development. If you can play hockey well, you can play well in Trotz's system, especially at wing. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any forwards that were cut from the preds strictly because they weren't playing well, who went on to have successful seasons elsewhere.

I'm not guaranteeing his success, since he clearly has some mental issues to his game, but I would not be shocked at all to see him turn it around. I think that's exactly what the team needs to happen honestly, he has a talent in areas that we are severely lacking

Smith had more success at wing then he did at center. With the addition of Cullen it means Smith can move to wing and hopefully have more success without all the defensive responsibilities that Trotz puts on his centers. He needs to get off to a good start and get his confidence back. He'll either do great or be a perma scratch.

And he had great success at the Worlds playing wing as well so maybe that's his spot at the end of the day.

I could see him scoring 55 points and I could see him scoring 10 points.

I agree, he has to be at wing to be effective.

Finally got my THN Yearbook. All I can say is this: Ranking Weber 10 spots below Suter the Traitor? We're gonna have two d-men with chips on their shoulders this year.

as much as I bag on him I wouldnt be surprised to see Smith get things together, score around 18 goals and win a few of shootouts for us...

Smith with 2 points in the first 20 games. He will go on a bit of a hot streak for a week or two, and then flat line again.
