My son showed up 2 days later to pick them up, only to be given brand-new textbooks at the brand-new price that had been applied to the credit card. No contact from them to indicate the change, despite them having our phone number and e-mail address.

To put it lightly, we weren't pleased. Getting ready to go to battle with the bookstore.

The textbook thing really is a racket. It was when I went to university 100 years ago and it continues to be.
Anyone that waste money buying books from the school bookstore is an absolute fool and you deserve to be charged an arm and a leg. Go to Amazon. Search their site. You can buy used new or international editions, which are the same thing just not in color for so much less. Then you can sell them after the semester for a hell of a lot more then the ****** bookstore will give you.

I wish Amazon was around or at least more established when I was in college as an undergrad during the early to mid 90's. Internet was not as commerce and porn based as it is now. My email account at Temple was still in DOS..

Anyway...I used to hate professors that would make us buy the books they published and then would only go over maybe a chapter in them. Total scam artists pimping their wares...

While that works at some universities, others you must get the books from the bookstore as the professors/department heads write their own books. 8 of my Comp Sci books were written by the cs head, while 5 of my finance books were written by the finance chair head. In fact if the **** hole known as ****** is any indication, from the front pages there it seems like this is now becoming a major trend throughout the US.

Though don't let me get in the way of your victim blaming. Keep it up, yo.

You mean, they write their own books, have them independently published, and then have them sold at the bookstore? Color me skeptical.

And *most* professors who do write a book see very little money out of it, with few exceptions.

Folks who do write books, typically, but not always, are at the top of their respective field. I can only speak for the social sciences, but a real easy way to tell if a book is quality or not is to look at the publisher. University series are prestigious AND peer reviewed, so they are not full of ****. Certain mid-tier imprints are also good (Sage, Springer, etc.) For older books, Free Press was traditionally used.

There is actually a decent amount that goes in to books.

Amazon doesn't have all the books though. I could only find 1 of my 4 books that I needed for this semester.

I know this will disappoint the vast majority of HFBoards users, but I will probably not be posting very much around here for the foreseeable future. I start a new gig on Tuesday that will have me outside of the office on most days rather than inside the office. It's been real, friends.

Good luck with the new job.

Best of luck with the new position, DFF. Although we often differed in opinions, I'll miss reading yours.

Thanks. I'll still be around, just probably won't be posting during the the normal business hours since I won't be in my office as much. I'm sure someone will take my place to go at it with Beef (or I will from time to time when I get a chance).

Sure glad I wasn't doing anything more important than watching football yesterday. Those "non-drowsy" antihistamine pills I took yesterday knocked me out within half an hour.

I'm planning on going to the Meet the Flyers taping this Friday at 2pm. It says "first come first serve." Anyone been to this? Where should I arrive and what time to promise a seat?

I can't speak for the rest of Canada but Ontario "Target" stores have the Weber One-Touch Silver 22.5 charcoal grill (the one I've been using for 5+years) on clearance for $34.49. It's regularly $115.

She's not bad looking. Stop it.

Although the Sarah Baicker thread from way back when was really entertaining.

That thread turned into a creeper fest pretty quick especially when she posted. Not sure how many posters received restraining orders....
