OT - What would your Olympic lineup look like?

Assume that this was an Olympic year and you were responsible for selecting Team Canada's lineup. Who would you pick? My lineup would look like:

Shanahan - Crosby - Iginla
Marleau - Spezza - Heatley
Cheechoo - Lecavalier - St. Louis
R. Smyth - Brind'Amour - Morrow

Subs: Staal, Tucker, Briere

Niedermeyer - Pronger
McCabe - Jovanovski
Phaneuf - Weber

Subs: Redden, Campbell, Bouwmeester

Brodeur
Turco
Fernandez

I would have loved to include Sakic, but I had no idea who I would have dropped. No team I ever put together will ever include Thornton. He's not a winner. Brodeur has not had the strongest numbers this year, but he is experienced and he is putting it together.

What the heck, we can't always agree, so here's how I see it right now.

G- Brodeur [the day will come, but it's not here yet] Luongo, #3, who cares, Turco, me

D- Roughly in order, I have extra because they always drop like flies before tournaments

Niedermayer,Pronger, Phaneuf, Regehr Redden,Hamhuis Bouwwmeister,Jovanoski,Boyle

F Bergeron-Crosby-Staal
Smyth-Thornton-Iginla
Lecavalier-Briere-Gagne

Sakic-Heatley-Richards-St.Louis-Spezza-Morrow

Yeah, 9 of 15 forwards are natural C's. I include Beregeron because they need players who can read the game and adjust. His proven chemistry with Crosby makes him a key player.

I don't deny the obvious talent of the Ottawa pair nor the 3 TB players but wouldn't guarantee them anything. I like the edge St.Louis brings to big games, Staal's ability to get open and finish. I'm not sure Morrow and Smyth need to be there, but at least one of them. Some don't like Thornton in big games, but you can't walk away from his ability. There's no reason to have the Sens' guys ahead of him, imo.

This is the list if the Olympic was in 2007.

1: Rick Nash - Sidney Crosby - Patrice Bergeron
2: Simon Gagné - Vincent Lecavalier - Dany Heatley
3: Ryan Smyth - Eric Staal - Jarome Iginla
4: Martin St. Louis - Rob Brind'Amour - Brenden Morrow

Sub: Patrick Marleau, Joe Thornton, Brad Richars, Jonathan Cheechoo

First line, Crosby and Bergeron are so awesome both together, with a true sniper with Nash, that would be a offensive dynamite line. Second line, Gagne got some experience at the Olympic, Lecavalier is one of the best center in the league with a scorer like Heatley. Third line, intensity with Smyth and Iginla, Staal is not shy, they will produce, and the fourth line, speedy foward in St. Louis, with a good center like Brind'Amour, a true warrior, and Morrow is there for eat the other team. 3 Centers and one winger on the back up list.

1: Chris Pronger - Scott Niedermayer
2: Wade Redden - Robyn Regehr
3: Jay Bouwmeester - Dion Phaneuf

Sub: Shea Weber, Sheldon Souray, Rob Blake

Better first duo on any team of the world, Redden can be good when he want to play well, with a good shutdown d-men like Regehr. Last pairing, young Phaneuf and Bouwmeester, solid. On the back up list, young guys like Shea Weber (I like him a lot, one of the best slap shot in the league in Sheldon Souray, and a veteran D in Rob Blake.

1:Martin Brodeur
2:Roberto Luongo
3:J-S Giguere

Rick Nash's a floater.

wouldnt want him on the team.

I know Thornton is not big in big games, so im not sure id put him in the starting line-up. i think he'd be better in reserve.

the players who, in my opinion, are a given are:

Crosby
Staal
Niedermeyer
Smyth
Brind'Amour
Brodeur
Pronger
Briere

The rest is pretty arbitrary imo.

As much as I admire what Brind'Amour's done th elast year and chnage, I don't see him as a given. I think he proved 8 years ago that he couldn't play on that ice surface. He was exposed in 98, imo, and unless they want a a faceoff specialist as a 13 th forward, I'd be surprised to see him.

I really think that Brind'Amour has really rejuvenated himself since then. I picked him not only for his ability to score, but because he is a defensive presence and his faceoff abilities. He and Morrow would be my key penalty killers.

I had the same problems you did when trying to construct my team. Canada's positional strength is down the middle. We don't seem to be producing quality wingers, and the ones we do have are either struggling this year and/or are defensive liabilities (see Nash for example).

As an aside, is anyone else having problems posting on this site? It's slow as heck, and more often than not I get error messages. What's the deal?
