Ryan Gropp has committed to the University of North Dakota.

Quote:
The 1996-born forward from British Columbia gave a verbal commitment to UND on Thursday night, ending his heavy recruitment.

Gropp, a former first-round pick in the Western Hockey League, had several offers, but decided to make Grand Forks his future home after visiting the campus earlier this week. He will likely join the team in the fall of 2014.

“It’s a pretty exciting time,” said Gropp, whose father played college hockey at Colorado College. “I had been talking to a bunch of schools but this was only my second visit. I fell in love with the place. I was impressed by everything – the building, the coaching staff – and that was it for me."

Sucks that Seattle couldn't get Gropp, maybe he changes his mind.

Looked solid yesterday, had a couple of great passes, but his teammates couldn't get him the puck at all. Scored on his best chance, and it was a self-produced chance. Absolutely beautiful move and went top-shelf. Other than that he had a quiet game. I'll see him and the TBirds again at 3:00, we'll see what he can do against Victoria's ;physical defenseman.

Barzal had the same amount of impact all weekend, had good puck possession skills, and had good consistent passes. Physical defenders were able to shut him down regularly though, he definitely needs to work on his strength.

But all in all, a pretty good preseason for Barzal, he should get better as the season goes along, but I don't see him being a PPG player this year.

Jonathan Drouin outscored Nathan Mackinnon by 30 points in only 5 more games played this year. Which one went 1st overall? I know you said there are exceptions but this is still a glaring example.

They don't use stats to fill gaps in knowledge. They use the eye-test to see who's the better player. No scout (at least not one who will have a job for long) will ever say, "Well this player always looked better when I watched him, but this other guy had 5 more points so I'm going to go with him."

Agreed.. he wont be a point per game player this year. He will get his fair share of points though this year as a 16 year old thats forsure. He is definately going to be a star in the league but I feel his first season will be a bit quiet FOR Matt Barzal(used to getting ridiculous point totals in every league he's played in, but still will be an impressive point total for a 16 year old). He will get majority of his points this season on the PP playing with Shea Theodore. Some people are a bit concerned he only had 2g. 0a. in 3 preseason games but remember, Seattle sat out alot of their main guys in those 3 games and just rolled the lines to get all the young guys icetime. He will be their #1 center this season and on the #1 PP line to start off the season and it is his job to lose.

Are you sure? Right now I see Delnov centering Lipsbergs and Honey as the top line (based on last years chemistry). I think Barzal will start as the #2 center, it will keep him away from the toughest d matchups and give him a chance to grow into the league and then we'll see from there.

Ya I agree they were good forsure. But throughout camp the line of Barzal-Hickman-Lipsbergs was unreal. Hickman hasn't played any exhibition games due to a suspension from last season yet though so they havent played together in past 3 games. Ya i guess i shouldnt say #1 center, cause if the lines are Hickman-Barzal-Lipsbergs and Delnov-Honey-Troock are a VERY solid top 6 and kinda tough to determine whos #1 and #2 line(those 6 can mix and match around to see who clicks with who.. maybe Delnov-Honey-Lipsbergs again and then Barzal-Troock-Hickman or whoever). Either way their top 6 looks great and Seattle may actually turn some heads this season!!.. If Troock stays healthy this season for once, that will be a HUGE help. Its like adding a top WHL player for free(has rarely played in 3 seasons due to constant injuries but apparently his shoulder will be 100% soon)

He's a great kid from a nice family. Have seen him skate a few times a year since he has been 13 and he keeps getting better.

4 points in 5 games so far and a +4.. Playing 2nd line center minutes right now and alot of powerplay time...slowly getting more and more comfortable. Shea Theodore was returned back from Anaheim a couple games ago so look for them to eventually click on the PP and put up alot of points. So far so good!!

So do people think this guy is the real deal now? I know it's early but if Barzal keeps up this pace, could people see him surpassing McDavid?

By the time next season comes along(both their draft year) it is going to be a battle of mcdavid vs Barzal for #1. Kinda like how in their draft year it was Hall vs Seguin. Barzal is an UNBELIEVABLE talent. I know McDavid is unreal too and alot of people back east in Ontario, Quebec etc havent seen Barzal play yet, but believe me, he is the "McDavid" of the WHL. I Cant wait to see them next season in their draft year.. Should be a great battle. Right now I think McDavid has the upper hand a bit, but they will be neck and neck soon

How is he looking taking draws against bigger/stronger opponents. Would be sick to have him in Oilers silk playing alongside RNH
