Don't forget the Campbell and Huet contracts.

If that team hadn't signed those albatross contracts they could look like this right now:

Hossa Toews Bickell
Ladd Sharp Kane
Brouwer Handzus Saad
Kruger Shaw Bollig

Keith-Hjalmarsson
Byfuglien-Seabrook
Rozsival-Leddy

Niemi
Campbell

Disgusting.

Not Hammer. He had a contract, they matched San Jose's offersheet for him the next summer.

Funny story, four of the six guys they ****ed up with have played for the Oilers since. Aaron Johnson, Colin Fraser, Ben Eager and Cam Barker.

They didn't let Niemi walk until the next summer, and to be fair, he had a meh season and a meh playoffs - he just happened to be the guy in net. So it's fair that they would want to upgrade, Niemi just became more consistent than the guy they eventually replaced him with.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 1m
Tough sledding for NYR/RFA Derek Stepan. Player seeks McDonagh $ (6 x $4.7M) but no arb rights, NYR holding firm on Subban level bridge deal

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 21m
Kadri believed to be looking long-term (6 yrs in Tavares stratosphere of $5.5M per). Leafs want short, 2 yrs at P.K. Subban $ ($2.875M per).

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 16m
Franson was eligible for salary arb but didn't file. Believed to want long term (4 yrs at $4M+ per). TOR aiming short, yr or 2 at <$3M per.

Good to see teams holding firm.

Good on MTL for holding firm with Subban to begin with.

I'd like any of Stepan, Kadri or Franson on the Oilers. If negotiations blow up on any of them I hope MacT can swing a deal to acquire one.

Yes please to Stepan. a package of Gagner + would be perfect for me.

Kadri is a fine hockey player, but how much of an upgrade over Gagner is he? and at what cost?

Franson is also good, but he doesnt really fit into our top 4. And he is largely a PP specialist with a bomb of a shot. Hopefully Belov can fill that PP role.

To me Belov looks to be pretty much Franson-lite

Smart of Kadri to try and cash in on a half of one inflated season. The Leafs would be dumb to sign him long term.

The Oilers are giving Gagner almost $5M per season. Kadri almost matched Gagner's career high in points, and matched his career high in goals in a shortened 48 game season, part of which he wasnt even playing in the top 6 in his first full season in the league.

Franson has very little physical element to his game. Belov has a reputation for being much more physical.

Of course, if you want to go back and see Sam Gagner in February-April of his first real NHL season - you'd see he had 28 points in 29 games. Now imagine Gagner asking for Tavares money after that.

But I'm sure a guy playing 16 minutes a night and shooting 17% will be able to sustain that scoring pace.

Gagner has produced in the NHL for 6 years and was coming up on free agency.

Kadri has no room to bargain in comparison. Hasn't proven anything.

Kadri is an RFA with plenty of RFA years left. Gagner had 1, totally different. Kadri also had the leagues highest on ice S% at 16%. League average is 8% and the highest consistent player has 13%, held by Crosby. Kadris point totals will take a massive hit next year

On ice save # = checkmate Sergei

How could I possibly argue against that amazing advanced stat.

Kadri will our score SS over the next 3 years. Bet the farm on it. Kids a gamer who is able to improve his weaknesses.

Well considering on ice s% is basically a measure of luck. Youd be saying you think Kadri basically defies the fate all other regular NHL players. Its a huge indicator of how many assists (and even goals) youll get, based on the likely hood that the puck will go on in the net while your on the ice.

Every season only 2 or 3 regular players (over 30 games) have on ice s% over 11 and only 1 or 2 top six players have that high on ice s%. Each one of those players regresses (OIS % and most often point totals to) to the mean the years after, at a shockingly high rate (like nearly every player except Crosby)

His point totals began to take a hit near game 30 and continued to fall into the playoffs, was he facing tougher comp? or fatigue? or luck was running out?

Not only that but his s% was is also un sustainable at 16%. Look no further to Eberle for that arguement.

Hockey is a game with a large component of luck, every player is subject to the ups and downs, no matter how much of a gamer they are

Gagner was one of the luckiest players in the league for the first 25 games of last season. Guess his luck ran out for the last 15 especially, when he stopped having to face easy competition after RNH went down.

#KHL salary cap is almost $39 million. SKA spent the most on salaries at over $38m (Kovalchuk doesn't count), Medveščak the least at $5.5m.

I suspect if Wang was allowed the Isles would've had some low salaries like Medveščak.

So Kiprusoff has officially retired.

He did so rather quietly.

I heard from somewhere that the Flames might be investigated for the Kipper contract since it was circumventing the cap if he retires. Anyone hear that?

If Alfie isn't investigated then no way Kipper should be investigated. Especially after what Alfie said.
