1896 Baltimore - Cradle of American Hockey

Part of the "Turning Back Hockey's Pages" series by D.A.L. MacDonald of The Gazette. The profile features Arthur E. Scott, Quebec 1888-1898 but its main focus is a two game exhibition trip in April 1896 to Baltimore to play local teams. Interesting anecdote about a disputed goal in 1898 in a champioship game between Baltimore and Philadelphia teams:

That's a very interesting article, but I don't think we can call Baltimore the "cradle" of American hockey. The game was played their quite early, but it did not take off like it did in other places at about the same time, western Pennsylvania, Minnesota, even New York. Winnipeg teams had played in Minneapolis and St. Paul before 1896 anyway, but perhaps they weren't considered a "large American centre" at the time?

Were not, but the author of the linked article D.A.L. MacDonald is, hence C58's thread title. Late 19th early 20th Century Hyperbole essentially. Colorful. Refers to a court case over issues pertaining to a Championship Game with a team from Philly. Certainly Baltimore was an important center, Maryland in general at that time, Babe Ruths hometown. The entire downtown wiped out by a massive fire in 1904, and a city lagging behind Chicago, New York & elsewhere in basic infrastructure, be it water & sewage, transportation.... Hardscrabble.

By "we". I simply meant anyone studying the history of the game.
