Hal Gill signed to a one-year contract worth $700,000 (Oct. 1)

Now with a link....

Quote:
With five days remaining until Training Camp, and Day 2 into the club's Rookie Camp, the Flyers announced that they have signed veteran defenseman Hal Gill to a Pro Try-Out and he will attend the team's training camp, set to begin on Sept. 12 at the Wells Fargo Center.

Gill appeared in 32 games with the Nashville Predators last season, where he went scoreless and averaged over 13 minutes of ice-time per game.

One area the Philadelphia Flyers could use help is on defense and theyre looking to address that in training camp.

Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe reports the Flyers have invited veteran blue liner Hal Gill to camp on a tryout. The 38-year-old, 67″ defenseman spent the past season and a half with the Nashville Predators. Previous to that hes played for Montreal, Pittsburgh, Toronto, and Boston.

In his run with the Preds last season, Gill averaged just over 13 minutes per game as a third-pair defenseman. In 32 games he had no points, 12 penalty minutes, and was a minus-3.

Quote:
Gill played 32 games for the Nashville Predators last season and is currently an unrestricted free agent after the Predators bought out his contract in July. The 6-foot-7 blueliner won a Stanley Cup in 2009 with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Hes also played for Boston, Toronto and Montreal.

Im excited for the chance to prepare and play with a great organization, Gill told Josh Rimer. Im thankful to the Flyers for giving me this opportunity.

I like it with all the injuries we had last year and he knows what he does well and he is VERY good at it.

Not yet. This is from yesterday:

Andrej Meszaros has not been cleared by doctors – yet – but talking to Holmgren it sounds like a foregone conclusion that he will be.

“He’s good,” Holmgren said. “Until we actually have the medicals it’s not official– and I don’t know when that is for Andrej – but I have no hesitation to say he will be cleared.”

He's healthy.
He will be cleared once the excamination will get done at the Skate Zone.

Gill won't be anything more than a #7 insurance policy.

Hope so. My initial reaction was just another body that might prevent Gus from playing. He needs to play and not sit in the press box or in the AHL.

Weird. I thought the team was pretty well packed to the gills anyway with defensemen. (no pun intended).

Matt Walker isn't on the team anymore. Anyway, I'm not sure how Gill could possibly fit on this team.

I'm hoping that this is more of a mentoring/leadership role for big defenders like Lauridsen and Morin during training camp. Gill can give them advice and options that come from experience. At 1100 games, I'm sure he's got a lot of information he'd be willing to share. His presence could even benefit guys like Schenn and Coburn, too.

Can't hurt. Would have been nice to have had him 5 years ago.

Mez should rent not buy.

He sucked and was too expensive to have on the pro roster anyway. Now he's a free agent no one will sign, ever.

Only way he gets a roster spot is as a #7 and for that to happen he'd have to outplay Gervais and Gus or just Gervais with someone (Mez?) getting moved. In short he most likely won't be on the team come October.

I think Mez is out. D winds up looking like this:

Timonen-Schenn
Coburn-Streit
Grossmann-Gus
Gervais/Gil

Gervais or Gil are both fine #7 d-men.
