Thrashers Recall Defenseman Mark Popovic from Chicago (AHL);
Garnet Exelby Placed on Injured Reserve
The Atlanta Thrashers have recalled defenseman Mark Popovic from the
Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League and have placed
defenseman Garnet Exelby on injured reserve (illness), retroactive to Nov. 12,
according to Executive Vice President and General Manager Don Waddell.
The Thrashers roster now stands at 23, including 13 forwards, eight
defensemen and two goaltenders (see attached roster).
Popovic, 24, has earned four points (two goals, two assists) and 12
penalty minutes in eight games with Chicago this season. Acquired in a
trade from Anaheim in exchange for Kip Brennan on Aug. 23, 2005, he has
appeared in eight NHL games with the Mighty Ducks and Thrashers.
Exelby, 25, has two assists and 21 penalty minutes in 18 games with the
Thrashers this season. The native of Ste. Anne, Manitoba has earned 24
points (two goals, 22 assists) and 271 penalty minutes in 179 NHL games
with the Thrashers.
I would imagine Hartley will keep the top 4 intact, and give them even more minutes than normal. Hnidy will probably be a mainstay on that third pairing, being a fairly grounded veteran and all. From there I'd guess Coburn and Popovic will both get their shot until McCarthy comes back?
Pairing either one of the kids with Hnidy could be a better match than Exelby & Hnidy are. I doubt any of them will get much icetime though..
