Tom Gilbert may be headed for Switzerland

Quote:
Defenseman Tom Gilbert has been trying to land another NHL job since being bought out by the Minnesota Wild this year. Things haven’t gone so well on that front.

Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal reports the 30-year-old Gilbert may wind up overseas in Switzerland thanks to the lack of interest here.

Gilbert has spent seven seasons in the NHL, mostly with the Edmonton Oilers, and finished last year with the Wild. As a puck-moving, offensive-defenseman he’s gotten knocked for not playing physical enough, but his advanced statistics say he’s solid in the role he plays.

Should he not wind up headed abroad, a team like the Carolina Hurricanes could come knocking as they’ll be without Joni Pitkanen for an as yet unknown amount of time.
wow I'm not the biggest gilbert fan but the guy isn't that bad. Is he asking for to much money? usually that's the issue.

I'm completely shocked, he isn't even a bad player. Certainly better than the likes of Mark Fistric, Nick Schultz and Corey Potter, who are all signed to 1-way contracts.

Doesn't belong with the other two.

Sad that Gibby can't find a job. Always liked him.

I'm not sure what Gilbert you guys have been watching but he really is that bad and there's good reason why he hasn't landed another NHL job yet.

I am surprised Carolina didn't at least give him a camp invite yet. Without Pitkanen, Sekera will have to contribute the most offense of the top 4. That's probably not gonna work too well.

Seems like any of the guys left now, are victims of the cap going down for 1 year...all will be underpaid for at least one season if they want to stay in the league...

I always liked Gilbert, I guess he's a lot worse than I thought.

I'm pretty sure Gilbert would still be on the Wild if Heatley was able to be bought out.

I would still take him back if it was possible to sign him and still be under the cap.

Only reason he's not getting a job is due to all the lack of cap space caused by the cap drop. He'll be back in the NHL in 2014-2015, maybe even this season when team's start getting injuries. Would like to see him back on the Wild in 2014 if he's willing to come back and takes a decent pay cut.

It's crazy there's talk of him signing in the Swiss league. Unless his play has fallen off that much because of his illness, he'd be a perfect fit in Carolina. It'd be as if McBain had never left IMO.

I could also see him playing his way onto Edmonton's top-6 if given the chance. Although it's best that both parties move on.

Gilbert is a dime a dozen player. not sure a year in europe would aid any hope of a future nhl gig. maybe if expansion comes sooner than later

He's not better than Nick Schultz. He's certainly better than a alot of other guys who did get signed this year though. I wonder if he was asking for too much money. If I was the Oilers, I would think about bringing him in on a pto. They have a lot of lesser defensemen coming to camp already.

one of my favorite hfboards moments remains when multiple oilers fans were trying to convince me that Gilbert was miles better than enstrom about 4 years ago

I'm starting to think that Joe Corvo or his agent was really smart this off season.

Some good, second tier or third tier guys like Gilbert, White, Hainsey, Coliacovo, etc.. are all unemployed while Corvo will be pulling down 900K on an NHL team and Corvo isn't appreciably better than any of them.

Sure it was a pretty big paycut, but by taking the first legitimate offer, Corvo will be playing in the NHL next year while the guys who are waiting for a better offer will likely be waiting all season and hoping their KHL or Swiss league play will earn them a spot on an NHL squad next year.

With the cap crunch, teams simply don't have the money to afford second tier guys and they'll likely end up without contracts because they misunderstood the market.

He has some weaknesses in his game, but... he isn't a bad player. Funny that Gill, a notably worse player, received an opportunity while Gilbert hasn't.

Gilbert's one injury to Team X's blueline away from being an emergency sign. I bet he holds fast this side of the Atlantic and waits for the call.

With Whitney heading to Blues' camp essentially as an after thought, then Gilbert, with no comparable injury history, should be a lock for somewhere.

Likely a one year European workation with an out clause for the inevitable team that will need him once an injury happens.

Gilbert is a good bottom pairing guy. He is likely a cap casualty at this point. BTW, I am NOT a Gilbert booster. I was so happy when the Oil traded him. Having said that, he is an NHL calibre guy.....just not at 4 mill. More like 1.75-2.25 when the cap goes back up.

I expect he will be back soon.

No. He is about the same maybe slightly better. Gilbert is nothing more than a 6-7 guy now on a good team with PP ability that is above average. Good for the right team and on a smaller contract.

I really don't think it's money, he's not going to be making very much in Europe, probably much less than the league minimum.
