Cool! I think it's a great honor to have this award in Mark Messier's name.
It couldn't be more fitting to have a player of his stature have input on what current player receives it each month.

At the garden...my guess would be that Shanny has a good shot.

If Shanny gets it that's going to look bad for our newly named captain Jagr. Both could get IMO since you could say Jagr is help lead the team again despite not even being at 100% yet.

Then again its going to biased if someone on the Rangers does get it first for starters.

Messier was on the FAN590 earlier today-Hockey Central with Nick Kypreos and Darren Millard.Eventually,Messier wants to get back into the NHL in an executive position. He is busy with his children and promoting the Cold X product right now

Jaromir Jagr inherited his C, but Brendan Shanahan will be the first recipient of the new NHL award named after Mark Messier. Before tonight’s game in the Garden, Shanahan will be given the Mark Messier Leadership Award. It will be given out to an NHL player on a monthly basis beginning tonight.

ok now dont get me wrong, i like this award, but... it takes them like a year to introduce a mark messier award but they still didnt come up with a wayne gretzky award for most assists?

is it because wayne is still active in hockey?
but then what happens if mark gets a coaching job in the nhl? whos gonna pick the winners?

My understanding, and this is going back a few years (though I believe it still holds true) is that Gretz has turned awards being named for him.

With his number retired, the statues, everything else, he didn't want another thing on top of that.

As for the Messier award, my guess is that eventually it would go to a vote if Messier returns to hockey in some capacity.

To add to Edge's comments I think that if you are an active member of the NHL either a player or working for a organization they wont name awards after you. Again I dont think I think I remeber hearing that somewhere

Again that's of a few years ago so I'm assuming that it's still the case.

Hockey is an awkward spot in the sense that it's awards are all named for players from generations past but you could argue their best players have really been spotlighted in the last 30-40 years or so.

It's an awkward balancing act they walk, and while I don't always agree with the league I can understand their situation.
