FIFA rankings are one of the biggest jokes out there. But, if we're going to use them...

Germany is ranked #2
Panama is 40th
Costa Rica 42nd
Honduras 43rd

those are teams the U.S. beat in CONCACAF, for comparison Panama, Costa Rica and Hondras are right around Ireland, Scotland, Austria, Australia, Slovenia. Very real teams.
While I agree that FIFA rankings are a joke, my point is that the teams they are beating are bottom of the list teams, let them play more teams that so called higher ranked, like most European teams ,and you will have a much different story. In fact, I will say the US is not even holding a .500 record then against teams of that magnitude.

People see "European teams" differently. If you mean England, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, then sure. Probably less than 50% for a country that has just started to come into the soccer scene.

If you mean Scotland, Ireland, Russia, Estonia, Denmark, Greece, Sweden, Slovakia, Turkey, I think the U.S is better than those sides.

If your argument is that the win streak is nothing because we've only played two strong European teams in the process, you have a right to that opinion. But Id have to say we'd be nitpicking at what's been one of the best years.

Thanks for appreciating that I have an opinion. While I do agree the US is behind in years played as opposed to the rest of the world, at the same time we have a much much bigger population to choose from. I do feel that the second tier European nations that you mention we would fair ok against but I don't
Think that the would win even 50% of those games.
My point all along has been that this 11 game win streak is a little over hyped. At the same time it is fun talking soccer with all of you.

I think you have a good point, is what I'm trying to say.

Still, after following the USMNT for 11 years I've learned to look at it more from a what-is rather than a what could be. I appreciate the small steps forward.

I see youth soccer getting more and more popular in this country, the level of your everyday small high school soccer teams is a lot better as we get coaches in who actually know the game. We had, probably the best selection of US players ever for the upcoming World Cup, many of whom played at least part of their careers in Major League Soccer.

But yes, there is still a gap in class between the United States and top 15 national teams. Our best guys are good, but not great in top 4 leagues. But I'm appy to celebrate any step forward and the USMNT is a lot better right now than it was 1-2 years ago in the early JK/ late Bob Bradley days.

Excuse the hipster comment but that place is a bit too mainstream. Lots of fairweather, counter culture footy fans who only like the game while among others or to seem cool or different or cultured to their friends. I was there a couple of times and few people knew what they were talking about and like typical americans loved to complain about diving.

USA lost to Costa Rica 3-1 in a world cup qualifier. Also snapped their long winning streak.

In a bit of a shocker, Honduras beat Mexico 2-1 tonight as well.

A loss every so often is not a bad thing to recalibrate a team.

Definitely think Meara should start. He's been out for awhile though. Should definitely be the starter next year at least.

Okay, thanks. I noticed he wasn't playing in the CR game and didn't know why.
