There is a reason why NHL GMs place a value on experience and so-called intangibles.
Look at where the games were played, and what type of rinks they played in. Experience is over rated, they took experience over crosby in 2006 (big mistake). Team canada learnt the hard way from 2006 that you do not bring the good ol boys because they have been there done that, they learnt that they need to bring players that fit the new game, and can play both sides of the ice, not just one end.

If you don't know what i mean by look at the rinks. Here, 1998 (international ice), 2002 (nhl size rinks), 2006 (international ice), 2010 (nhl rinks), 2014 (going to be international ice).

Do you see a pattern with the years and the standings for canada? Same goes for the americans. Canada has this weird mentality when it comes to international ice, which seems to be the bigger the players the better, means less room to move on the ice lol.

And by the way between the 2002 And 2006 teams it was basically the same players just add a few younger newer players like thornton into the mix.

Told a family situation kept Joe Thornton from coming to Hockey Canada camp. He will try to make it to Calgary if he can.
Here's the 'family situation' they referred to:

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Joe Thornton had to cancel his trip to the Cdn Oly camp. He's tending to a family illness; 2-month-old baby was in hospital but out now.

It is interesting that insurance has scared away even Team Canada from practice as a team. A very large statement.

I think it is separate from the CBA. I think the actuaries have caught up with the cost of the risks. In part with the new appreciation for head injuries. I also think less money is being funneled to national budgets for professional entertainment. You would cut from both ends by using amateurs for national competitions. Not advocating that course of action, just a comment on signs of the times.

IIRC from BOH postings, it will be **tens of millions** to insure the $3B in hockey contracts playing @ Olympics.

Heard on NHL Network Radio that Canada has $1.5B of contracts in camp. (Would guess the cost would be many millions of $$s.)

something had to of changed since the last cba, because team canada did not care about the insurance 4 years ago for the vancouver olympics. they were doing full on scrimmages and if i remember correctly even played 1 or 2 mini games against an university team.

The insurance costs skyrocketed in the same time period. That's why I am not putting it on the CBA. Part of the reason for capping contract term was insurability.

In the era of the 2005 CBA, a lot of "long" and very expensive contracts were negotiated. 15 years for DiPietro. Luongo. Suter and Parise. Heck, even Crosby, Ovechkin and Malkin. Mucho dinero.

The 2013 CBA limits contracts to max 8 years (forcing GMs to be more "responsible").

The TSN 'panel' revealed it's (or what they believe the TC brass are thinking) Team Canada roster:

http://ctvmedia.ca/Network/TSN/Press...for-Sochi-2014

Couple of very interesting omissions (Hall for one) and a couple of interesting inclusions (Kunitz, Bouwmeester and/or M. Staal over Hamhuis).

Having Boyle listed as LD is also interesting.

Glad they put Couture on the team and left off Hall & Eberle. Every time they're on the ice together, Cooch smokes their [behinds].

tsn picked a player that will be 38 at the time of the olympics to make the team, and a player that is well past his teaching a old dog new tricks point.

so the reasoning he was left off of the 2010 team, will be the same reason he gets left off of the 2014 team. st louis does not play defense. same goes for stamkos.

Interesting the Czech's went from a list of about 25 (released in July) to a list of 67!

Looking at Marty's career plus minus, I'd have to disagree with you.

+12 for a player that is near 1000 points, and about 60 points under a point per game is not that good.

lets break down this years points.

40 points at even strength, 20 points on the power play, 0 points short handed (tampa has to be the only team to not score 1 short handed goal last season?)

so in essence st louis, doesn't help his team win, nor does he hurt his team.

but breaking even as a top line forward (art ross winner) is not a good thing.

and st louis can't even get brought into the mix with his line mate either, because he is even worse defensively.
