Ian White signs PTO with Jets

@Nichols_NHLPool

Ian White gets a PTO from #NHLJets and will attend camp, per @WiebeSunSports.

Completely forgot about him. Surprised he hasn't signed with a team. Good pickup if he sticks.

GREAT pickup. Surprised he wasn't signed earlier for them.

With Byfuglien, Bogosian, Enstrom, White and a wildcard like Trouba, the Jets D is looking solid. Not to mention their good forward additions in Frolik, Setoguchi and the continued development of Kane, Wheeler, Little, etc.

Hope he makes it, he can be a good second pairing guy with the right partner.

Loved this guy in Toronto. Is he still a capable top 4 d? Or more of a bottom pairing guy at this point?

White's hometown probably has something to do with it. I don't think the depth allows for White to sign with the Jets but it gets him in an NHL camp and he gets on-ice exposure.

An underrated point...even if a player attends a camp, he's still a UFA and sign with anyone. Sopel signed with Toronto while at Detroit's camp IIRC.

So if a player comes in and has a good camp, it might lead to other oppertinities.

I just know that there are at least 29 teams White would sign with...

Same thing happened with Andreas Lilja a few years ago. He went to Sharks camp on a PTO and signed with Anaheim after he was released IIRC. White could very well earn a contract through camp, just not in Winnipeg.

To me, White's still a pretty good bottom pairing defenseman capable of playing on both special teams situations. It's just Winnipeg's already got so many NHL-caliber defensemen. I just don't know if he makes it for that reason. I think he'll be on someone's roster come opening night though.

meh... post Lidstrom he was just.. well, meh. Was a healthy scratch pretty much all the way down the stretch (behind Kronwall, Ericsson, Quincey, Smith, Kindl, Dekeyser, Lashoff, and Coliacovo.. so #9) and no one was interested in him at the deadline, and apparently now as a UFA. I don't think his value is much of anything. And we badly needed right handed players on our blue line, by the way.

Thought he would have gotten a contract and not a PTO.

Kinda weird given our rhd depth:

Byfuglien
Bogosian
Trouba
Redmond
Postma

Top two are top four, trouba will be top four probably this year, and postma and Redmond are both ahl all stars with top four potential.

But these are best case scenarios. Without a doubt Buff & Bogo are 1-2. While I'm as big a Trouba fan as there is and IMO he is a virtual lock to be a top pairing guy one day, he is still a 19 year old raw rookie on the 1st year of his ELC. Redmond is on a 2-way and missed most of last season with a potentially career ending injury, and Postma has yet to prove he is more then a 6-7 guy. A guy like White might be a nice 1-2 year bottom pairing transition guy if he comes cheap.

Canes/TOML trade-offs are nothing new. You hired our damn coach once upon a time ago, not to mention lifted Francis and Wesley back in '03 and '04.

He signed with Chicago while with Detroit.

Sorry, I've never liked Sopel much and it bugged me to think he was with Toronto . Needed to correct that.

Wanted this guy in Vancouver's camp. He can easily be a good option for a #6 role. And it adds to the right side depth for the Canucks.
Jets are starting to look more like a playoff threat. Cut down on the quality chances and I think you see Pavs put up solid #1 stats.
