2013-2014 NFL Thread II? (Giants suck; Jets play Monday)

Since there has been a lot of stuff going on and week 2 is now, it's time for a new thread.

Sanchez may have surgery. Considering it, still.

If that's the case and the last down he ever played for the Jets came in a pre-season win, I think that would be a somewhat fitting end to his tenure with the team. For all intents and purposes, the Geno Smith era is now.

The Geno Smith era may start now but it won't last for long. Injury to Sanchez or not, making him the starting QB for this sad excuse for a team was the worst move they could have made. It could seriously ruin the kids confidence.

The Jets aren't nearly as bad as people make them out to be. They still have an extremely talented defense. All they need from the offense is to not turn the ball over, and the team is capable of 7 wins. They won 6 last season with a similarly talented team and the worst starting QB in the league.

Some HOF-caliber QBs started their careers on horrendous teams. Peyton Manning, Troy Aikman for instance. Hell, Eli was 1-6 as a starter his rookie season. I don't know that there's much correlation between a QB's long term success and the quality of his team his rookie season. Would Geno be better watching Matt Simms or Brady Quinn suck all year long? I think he'll be fine.

Destroy Brady's Ugg wearing legs tonight boys!

On a different note who should I start this week? Vick or Wilson. I'm leaning Vick just because of the 49ers D.

I would start Vick. Injury potential is there, yes. Eagles could be up big and run the ball in the 2nd half too. But their offense looked too explosive last week (Giants matchup should be tough but hopefully a great game as an aside) and he is so involved. I would ride him while he's hot.

But I don't like Wilson vs San Fran. Like you said San Fran's D is obviously no joke. On the plus side the 9ers will score, so there is a good chance Seattle is throwing. But part of me wonders if they are going to go crazy heavy Marshawn to try to control the game as best as possible / keep the defense rested to contain Kaep. Seahawks got away from that a bit (what did he have 17 carries?) last week and did not look too good, in my opinion. Also Marshawn did produce against the 9ers last year.

Also factor in how your matchup looks. Do you want the upside (Vick IMO) or to play it a little safer? Is it gonna be close between you and your opponent? Need to make up ground or just hit your projection?

I'm sure I'll be wrong and this post will be fun to quote. But that's my 2 cents. Hopefully this much fantasy chatter is ok in here.

I don't give fantasy advice during the season. 3 out of the last 4 seasons, I've won the "award" for leaving the most points on the bench each week. The teams I assemble through the draft are great, talented squads--typically I finish in the top four in each league. What holds me back is that I end up obsessing over matchups, and my "smart" picks always blow up in my face. If I have four guys being considered for two flex spots, for instance, I can guarantee that the two guys I end up starting will score considerably less than the two I keep on the bench.

I hear you! I hate that, it can really get in your head. Ultimately I try to make the best, most educated choices I can but after that its definitely a crapshoot.

There's a good quote by Matthew Berry along the lines of: "Would you rather lose because you went with your gut and took a risk, or lose because you started the guy the rankings told you to?" I'm definitely the former but can see both sides of the argument. Impossible to be 100% right every week.

Sanchez should have the surgery. Trying to play with the injury and then having surgery is a bad decision. He has no future with the Jets. They're cutting him next March. He will need to be healthy to hook up with another team next season. Trying to showcase himself with a torn labrum in the Jets offense isn't smart. Not with those skill players. Non-skill players mostly.

Yeah, it's abundantly clear that the Jets are not going to play him again. Why postpone the surgery? Do it now and get healthy for next season with another team. The league knows what he can and cannot do, so what's he going to showcase? Just go under the knife.

1. Great team names.
2. I generally like your team a lot.
3. Projections for Richardson and Garçon look aggressive. Andre Johnson has upside to that number but its not totally unfair if they are killing clock in the 2nd half. And Forte also has upside on his squad.
3. Like Edleman a lot this week. Brady likes him and I assume Jets will put Cromartie on Thompkins. I'm sure Jet fans would know better.
4. I would still probably start Vick. You're still playing a darn good team and will likely need 110+ to win. I believe Vick has more upside this week. If the Eagles do wind up being up big (limiting Vick's throws and fantasy points) it will be because of him or Shady (who you have). And if they run the ball more Shady will benefit. So in a way McCoy is a nice hedge for you. Went over my thoughts on Wilson before.

I could be 1000% wrong because its fantasy football but that is what I would do.

Sanchez should worry about his own future. The Jets front office has moved on. If it wasn't for the contract,Sanchez wouldn't be a Jet this season. They can cut him after this season and take a $4M-$5M cap hit. I think its $4.8M. Sanchez needs a change of scenery. Too much drama with the Jets. Butt fumble. The 50 plus turnovers in the last 2 years. The interception in the first possession in preseason against the Lions. He plays a few plays in the Giants game and gets hurt. He needs to get out of New York and away from the Jets.

Be careful with Roddy White. His ankle is in bad shape - Atlanta has all but admitted hes out theres as a decoy.

In my league my WRs are godly but my RBs are pretty terrible. I had the 11th pick in a 12 team league ad this kid who picked 9th took Julio Jones as his first overall pick. So I nabbed Megatron and then AJ Green.

Thanks buddy. I always like having a second opinion. I'm going to see whos out there on waiver as well.

Think I should stick with the Bears ? I kinda like the Chiefs too.

I know I am waiting for the official word. I fell for it last week. They said he was in, out, and in again, but did nothing. I'm watching him pretty close.

This^.

My ? is if it is clear there is no subterfuge, like a 'bruise' which might or might not be severe to = legit serious, if he's torn labrum out, yeah Sanchez gets paid, whether direct or insurance I don't care; but my ? is if he is LTIR or equivalent, can they get cap relief, and if so how much?

I'm not suggesting adding a QB (though if Vince Young were available cheap he'd be an option as HB, whether he wants THAT or not).

What this team needs is at least 1 stud defender and 2 legit OL.
If Sanchez' cap hit = exemption, that would help. Big time. This season.

My yearly fantasy advice? Don't draft the flavor-of-the-year running back with your first round pick. Everyone always picks last year's top back, and they are always disappointed.

Draft a sure-thing QB like Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning. Unless the points are so horribly skewed that an average RB scores more points, in which case you might have to make an exception.

Other tip; if you're in a smaller league (16 teams or less) draft two or more defenses. Put in the one facing the weaker opposition each week.

My two teams, "The Fuzzy Wuzzies" and "Gritty and Technical Gym Rats" are both looking solid this week.

Ugh. Debate --

Julius Thomas or Jason Witten this week?

Romo or Brady?

Is there a more consistently injured defense in the league than the giants? Enough already.

I didn't have a good feeling about the Dallas game, but even with 6 turnovers they managed to make quite an effort to win that game. If they can limit the turnovers vs the Broncos, I think they have a good chance to win. It'll be a shootout but the receivers are healthy, and match up well in my opinion. The defense played very well for having to deal with so much action on the field. I'm actually pretty optimistic about this game, I don't think Peyton repeats anything close to what he did vs the ravens.
