1 year 1.75m is the rumored amount from Detroit.

I'm baffled on this whole situation.

Dreger mentioned it on twitter as well.
I really dont care if he Cleary used the Flyers as leverage. I am just glad he isnt coming here.

Panotch said he confirmed it with his source (TIFWIW) after her report & Dreger said before her report came out that we were one of the teams possibly interested in Cleary for a three year deal.

That is actually a fair price if true...meanwhile Holmgren was going to overpay in spades (if the money and terms were true) to get a guy with "character." Yeah..so much "character" and integrity he pulled the same stunt Parise and Suter pulled on the Flyers...

But what are you gonna do as Holmgren says...it's a business...

Most of the Wings fan I saw didn't want Cleary back well before the Flyers got involved. They weren't just badmouthing him to make us feel bad. They were genuinely sick of him being an anchor on the ice, like we were with Briere.

And frankly, if they are getting Cleary for one year at $1.75 million that just means Homer is free to sign him to a multiyear contract in 2014.

I think this also proves Homer didn't offer Cleary a 3 year deal at 2.75 million. I don't care how much loyalty he has to the Red Wings, there's no way he turns down that rumored deal for a 1 year/1.75 million dollar deal.

McKenzie mentioned that Cleary chose the contract over the PTO contract. Didn't even mention the rumored 3 year deal.

I'm wondering if Cleary agreed to a PTO with us and then leaked to the media that we had the intention of signing him to a huge contract at the end of camp. This was probably all a stunt to get leverage for a better deal with Detroit.

Honestly, I'm indifferent to the situation. Cleary would've have been nice despite that large cap hit. A Talbot-esque cap-hit, with which he ended up, would have been even better.

Still, McGinn sounds like a nice plug on Couturier's wing at a cheaper price and a little more spark in his step at this stage of his career. Couple in the fact that there are plenty of options, we're fine with or without Cleary.

I knew something was up when Cleary and Wellwood both had the same number.

Yup came here to post the same. Everything I've read regarding this now has Cleary only stating that he got the PTO then quickly phoned the Wings saying "give me anything at all, I don't want to do a PTO." Possibly creating the 3+ mil rumor himself just to make the Wings think by low balling him they are getting a deal by it.

Not to nitpick but Cleary would be a well respected vet, i'm sure Wellwood would give up that number for him.

On another note, is Wellwood healed yet from the skate blade injury?

That's the point. Cleary would have 11, and Wellwood would have had something else.

Not sure. He's on the camp roster though.

Ah does it say they both have the number #11? Misunderstood thinking that you meant it was fishy that Cleary was #11 and that was Wellwood's number.

Pronger is on the camp roster too so I wouldn't look too much into that. Forgot about Wellwood's injury until now so i'm going to go look into that.

Zero percent chance it happened. Even though the public likes to believe that Homer lies he said that their never was a guaranteed contract offer* only to be called out by several members of the media, which leads me to believe that Cleary's agent and him leaked out information about a contract in hopes that Detroit would give him something. A player wouldn't turn down a 3 year deal for a good amount of money more just to stay in Detroit.

*If more info came out recently that I missed then forget everything I said.

it only came out on twitter from Helene St. James and i think Dreger mentioned something as well. But nobody else even picked up on it. So as it turns out we all got worked up(myself included) over nothing.
Did Cleary use the Flyers to get more out of Detroit? who knows.
am I going to lose any sleep over it? nope.

I guess this will fire up the Gagne rumors again. I really hope the Flyers stay away. i love the guy. he is one of my favorites but that ship has sailed. Let the kids battle out for a spot on the bottom 6.

Well, Holmgren seems to have agreed on my philosophy about Couturier's wing. We already have Read there, so we need somebody physical to compliment them and open space for them. As much as we all love Gagne around here, he's not the player the team needs right now.
