Things I look for in a top player:
- skill
- hockey sense
- compete level
- skating/strength

Yes, in that order. If you are high in the top 3, the last two don't mean very much anymore.

I'd say what sets apart the elite from the very good is the compete level.

Competitiveness is very high on my personal rankings, of course being a smart player with skill is more important, but I'd rather a highly competitive player over a large physical specimen who isn't highly competitive, or a fast skating player who isn't smart.

First of all he played for St.Louis Park in 2011, and when they started not doing good he went off to play for some Major Bantam team. Then the next offseason, he got a ton of hype for switching schools to Benilde and everyone was saying that this would be the best high school team of all-time with Besse and Naas and all of those guys. Then Benilde started faultering mid-season and Baer started blaming people and finally just left for the WHL. If Vancouver is bad next year, things could turn sour real quick.

+ Benilde is in SLP not Minneapolis

At the risk of boring the others on this thread, I feel like you could use some serious schooling on Alec Baer's hockey past here in Minnesota. There isn't a single accurate sentence in your post...

2008-2011: 97 Wisconsin Fire (Tier-1) - Played 4 or 5 seasons with them, and then the team folded.

2011-12: St. Louis Park HS (MNHSL) - Planning to attend Benilde-St. Margaret's for high school, he had an opportunity as an 8th-grader to play a season with his older brother on this team, and for his hometown. You state the team started not doing well? Under new Head Coach Shjon Podein, the program had a record-season turnaround, going 18-6-3 (2-23 the prior season.) It was a dream season for the program. Baer never left the team as you state, as any hockey DB will show.

And there was no "off-season hype" on Baer switching schools, as you suggest, because he never switched schools. Baer played on this HS team as Junior High student, and then enrolled at his planned high school.

2012-13: Benilde-St. Margaret's (MNHSL) - This team never faulted as you say, they went to our beloved state tournament. Baer was invited to see a Vancouver Giants game, over a non-playing weekend 2/3rds through the season, and was kicked off his team for it. Punished for even considering a future option outside of the State of Hockey. Common knowledge down here. He never left unhappy for the WHL (he was "blaming people"? ) Baer was left with no team or playing options under MNHS eligibility rules, so he signed with the Vancouver Giants.

Your post respectfully dwanmaster, is filled with nonsense.

Benilde didn't make it to the tourney... Wayzata beat them and Besse was whining to the refs the entire game. And they were easily the most hyped high school hockey team of all time.

Correction noted. They were upset in the section finals. But this was a 20-5 team that everyone expected to be defending their title at the state tournament. What player would pick up and leave, so close to experiencing this chance of a lifetime in MN hockey. It's the dream of every high school player, and defies logic.

Baer was kicked off his team, "for visiting a Major Junior program." That is a quote from the coach of BSM, who is also head of the MN coaches association, Ken Pauly. It was a political decision in an ongoing battle between Minnesota hockey, and competing non-NCAA interests outside our state.

To spin this and say Baer left the team unhappy...in light of the coach boldly admitting he was kicked off for attending a WHL game, is a complete lie.

Minnesota has a notorious online board for High School Hockey, where players like Besse and Baer can get regularly misrepresented by people like you. And those who look at other non-NCAA opportunities are regularly crucified. Your recent posts would fit in perfect there. It's a place where the Minnesota hockey bubble of ego-inflated everything, can truly be experienced!

I happened to go on to that Minnesota high school hockey message forum after Baer joined the Giants to ask what people could tell me bout him. Not only did I not get one response but they went and banned me without saying why lol.

Matt Spencer looking like a Darnell Nurse. Big, athletic, skilled with the puck, composed, and a big hitter.

And potential top pairing defensemen. Hanifin, Kylington, Pilon, Roy, Werenski, etc.

Or even Rasmus Andersson and Matthew Spencer. I've been hearing a lot of talk about Kylington lately. Is he now better than Rasmus Andersson? This is why i wanna see an updated 2015 ranking
