Habs talking with Simon Gagne (UPD: Habs say no per 98.5)

Luc Gelinas ‏@LucGelinasRDS 7m

Bob Sauvé l'agent de Simon Gagné dit à RDS qu'il a discuté avec plusieurs clubs dont le Canadien. Montréal donnera sa réponse rapidement.

Thoughts?

Yes!! Please! My favourite player, I'd buy the jersey immediately.

But yeah... Where would he fit?

Edit: agent likely using the Habs as leverage. That's probably it. :/

This.

If getting him means getting rid of Desharnais or Gionta, why not?

I could definitely see them offering him a try out.

In terms of a contract it would probably depend on Gionta and how close he is for October 1st. I'm sure whoever signs him it will be 1 year and about 1 mil so there is no real cap implication. If he sucks ass you waive him and 90% of the cap hit disapears.

I'd rather make room for Morrow.

That makes the team worse, not better.

Because Gionta is extremely valuable, and Gagne is injury prone?

Gagné was so dumb to tell his agent not to negociate with another team than Philly this summer.

How would exchanging Gionta or even DD for Gagné be a good thing for this team? Give your head a shake.

I think he meant if we could trade one of them. Not just dump them. More than likely still a bad move but it would depend on the return.

Of course, if you can't get anything good as a return then I agree it would be useless because Gionta is better. But if a team is willing to pay a good price and Gagné is brought in just to replace him short term, why not?

It's the only plausible explanation imo, I mean unless they plan to trade someone why would they try to sign him - or even contact him? So if they try to trade a forward, who could that possibly be beside DD and Gio?

ok in case of injuries, but he'll probably be the first one to get injured.

See the post where I answered to two other posters. Of course they're better than Gagné, won't argue against that.

Cause we really need more injury prone and under-performing players.

I'd sign him... for 1M$ or less he would come cheap. There are always injuries in a hockey season so it's unlikely he'll play 4th line all year. Even if he's not what he used to, he had a better season than Bourque last year. He doesn't look like the kind of guy who will be a cancer in the room. LA won a championship with him in the stands.

It's a low risk signing.
