Brent Johnson on waivers

I wonder if Ferguson would look at him for the Leafs? I know there's a bit of a jam in net: Belfour is the backbone, Tellqvist is the future, but Kidd has looked like god crap after a couple of decent showings against bad teams. Might Johnson be decent insurance in case Belfour gets hurt for any period of time? I think I'd be more comfortable with a Johnson-Telly duo than having to play Kidd against good competition...

I'd also rather have johnson, and at a fairly decent price to (1.1 mill)

Not only that... he has untapped potential still. He can amount to a good starter while telly develops. He's still young!

Perhaps Leafs claimed the wrong Johnson on waivers ....

Maybe there is still time to call the league office and tell them they meant Brent Johnson not Craig Johnson and that they just lost their heads for a moment there....

just played my NHL 2004 Dynasty and the Blues now have both craig and Brent on their team, pretty funny.

I'd like to see Brent Johnson become a Leaf.

Those in the know say johnson absolutely had to be removed from the Blues locker room. Not the first player to have attitude problems but why would we add that to our team? I still think Tellqvist should be in Toronto but if Kidd doesn't cost us too much i can live with it. Johnson has talent but has a reputation for soft goals as well.

I don't think Johnson would go over too well with Belfour. Belfour, while a stellar goaltender, is not the most personable guy from what I hear. Brent Johnson is a young goaltender with shattered confidence.
I don't think that makes a very good mix.

The Leafs should pick him up, they have nothing to lose and a good goalie to gain.

Plus according to Bill Watters on Leafs Lunch today the Leafs will be opening up about 6-8 million dollars very soon (if they havn't already) when they buy their US dollars for the year (apparently they have to buy them all at one time) and the stronger Canadian dollar should give the Leafs a lot more salary to play with.

Blackhawks deny interest in Johnson
TSN.ca Staff
1/13/2004

The Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly among three teams interested in claiming goaltender Brent Johnson off waivers from the St. Louis Blues.

While Blackhawks general manager Bob Pulford indicated they were not likely to do so, the Chicago Sun-Times quotes source in St. Louis who say Chicago, Columbus and Los Angeles are interested.

After just claiming Johnson (forward) off of waivers we would be dead last in the waiver order... So 28 teams would have to pass on Johnson before we'd get a shot at him... I HIGHLY doubt that he'll still be long enough for us to get a shot at him...

Although yes, he would be an interesting insurance package for Belfour...

Waivers are based on NHL standings and since Leafs near the top they would only get 28th claim at him regarless of picking up Johnson last week...

On forth period it is speculated that Johnson will actually end up in Toronto.

Maybe JF is looking to next year with this?

According to my understanding of the NHL Waiver Priority rules, the priority order is determined by reverse order of the standings... However, if a team makes a claim on a player they are moved to the end of the list... So, when Toronto made a claim on Johnson (forward), they moved back to the end of the list...

If someone can provide me with proof that this isn't the policy then so be it... But I'm pretty sure that this is the way it works...
