Punch Imlach caused a bit of a stir in the mid sixties using defensemen in a similar role. Led to the NHL introducing the Faceoff Interference penalty. Almost thirty years earlier the same tactic was used.
Bobby Hull as well having played Center in Jr & amateur, then occasionally late in his career while in Winnipeg. Though a Winger, it was quite apparent at times that he was innately thinking like a Center. The way he'd arc & play the entire surface beyond his prescribed lanes, use his team mates & opposition as blinds.
