Even though he played very well, everyone still gave him a hard time saying it was a short sample size [despite always having played well against those same teams].

If Mason plays great this next season & we win a Stanley Cup, I'm fairy certain there's going to be people STILL giving him a hard time saying it was just a 'fluke season' like his rookie season & continue to give him a hard time. What is it u want from the poor guy?
If everyone gives the guy a hard time before he's even done anything wrong, maybe [after playing a really good season] HE won't want to play HERE anymore.

Completely agree - the attitude some fans (seems like most) is asinine when it comes to our players sometimes (I'm guilty of it too).
A change in the way we think about the players may help them here.

I have extreme faith in our tandem this year, and if they manage to **** the bed, well see ya later.

again, that statement of "but our goaltending could suck" can be said for all but about 5-6 teams in the league every year.

and has been said in Philly every year since Hexy v1.

compared to last year, there is no downside.

i don't count the 25 year running possible ultimate downside ..... but thats just me

... and has been accurate pretty much every season, as well.

How can you not see the downside of Mason/Emery? Bryz hit the ultimate downside; why couldn't Mason/Emery do the same? Mason is coming to the team as one of the statistically worst goaltenders in the NHL over the past 5 seasons... and Emery had a leg bone grafted into his hip just so he could keep playing; no one knows how much longer he can continue as an NHL level goaltender.

There is plenty of downside.

The only thing that keeps me from being extra pessimistic about the goaltending is that both guys have the athleti ability to be great goalies in the NHL and they both want to prove it.

Of course the 'goaltending landscape' is different this season; the Flyers have different players occupying the top two spots on the goaltending depth chart since the beginning of last season.

That doesn't automatically eliminate the fact that the Flyers are still under a cloud of uncertainty between the pipes this year.

and that was exactly where we stood last year.

what we are reasonably certain of THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR, is:

no media circus
no low quality backup
no long term high dollar contracts
2 goalies battling equally for the #1 spot

compared to last year, no downside ... besides the yearly given 'we could suck in goal'

just my opinion.

I'm still trying to figure out how Steve, er.. IHeartHockey31 was able to take that picture while on the ice Cheers to some excellent reading though!

In either case, it's almost time - and I have every hope and much optimism that our stop gap duo Razor and Mason will put out the flames in net this season, hopefully putting the question marks to rest... A guy can dream can't he?
