Votto with the biggest HR of Reds season. 6-3 Reds. They need to win this one, Nats are 4 and 1/2 back and on fire.

Ballgame over. A's win.

Ron Washington's seat has to be getting warm, if not hot at this point.

Darvish's 4th 1-0 loss of the season. Only if he knew how to win....

Eventhough he was great and has been great since he's got here, the a's own him and give him another L.

5.5 up now

there was an article written this week about how jon daniels should be on the hotseat if the rangers blow this or blow it early in the playoffs.

it has to be ron washington doesn't it? he made it to two straight world series largely on the back of teams that daniels assembled for him. he's a bad tactical manager. it has to be time for a new manager in texas.

If he were to be on the hotseat it should for not getting rid of Washington sooner. In 2010 they were no match for the Giants, no manager would have been able to win that series for them. But Washington blew the 2011 World Series.

Feliz crying and not being able to pitch the 10th in game 6 didn't help matter. Nor did Cruz creeping in before Freese's hit.

Yes, Washington is a bad tactical manager and needs to go, but he didn't blow the world series, his players did.

There's a rift between the coaches and the players. If this lead gets even bigger and they bow out or miss the playoffs completely, players and coaches will be moved and let go, and both sides will have things to say on the way out.

Janssen closes out the game with a 2 bounce throw to 1st. O's running on fumes it appears.

Tillman has improved so much in a year. I like what I see from him.

Cole is becoming quite the pitcher.

Marlon Byrd goes deep, now 2-1 Buccos.

Strikeouts are coming now for him. Is that because he's simply locating his pitches better, or getting a feel for changing speeds?

Whatever it is he's fooling the batters more. He's getting swings and misses, when he wasn't before. It was frustrating early on that he'd get to an 0-2 count and throw a pitch that just missed the corner for a strike three and the batters wouldn't even take the bat off their shoulder...now they're swinging and missing on those counts.

He's throwing a lot more breaking stuff than he was earlier, and it is getting better. When you have two good off-speed pitches and a 100 MPH fastball things will eventually work out. He's still pitching for the hit more than the strikeout, but when he needs a strikeout he's getting them now.

I think he's learning to channel his competitive nature, too...he's the most animated pitcher I've seen pitch for the Pirates since Josias Manzanillo and very similar to the pitcher he's long been compared to - Roger Clemens - in that sense. Before when you'd see him animated on the mound it typically was a bad thing, now the more animation you see from him the better he's pitching. Having an A.J. Burnett on the roster definitely helps with things like that.

It'll be interesting to see what the Pirates do with him the rest of the way...Huntington is way too aware of what happened to the Nats last year and the Pirates don't have a better alternative for the 4th rotation spot in the playoffs with Wandy Rodriguez being shut down today...I think he'll be ridden out, they'll just be quick to yank him with any struggles.

Fielder thrown out at home trying to score the tying run on a double, Royals win!

Cue the Leyland 2nd guessing for not pinching running for Fielder...

Pirates hang on for the 2-1 win. STL down 3-0 late.

I might also 2nd guess them for sending Prince home from 1st on a ball hit to LF.

Meanwhile, can the Nats PLEASE lose a game? They were down 5-1 & have scored 3 in the 7th to make it 5-4

Harper the last Washington hope.

They IBB him - putting the winning run on - to face Ramos.

Ramos grounds out, Phillies barely hang on. They are cheering in Cincy, Pit and STL.

The race for the two wild card playoff berths in the American League is, well, wild.

Texas currently holds the first wild card spot, but now leads Tampa Bay by just one game, as the Rays hold the second wild card spot.

Beyond that, four teams, including the Orioles, are within 3 1/2 games of Tampa, meaning those same four teams are now within 4 1/2 games of a Texas team that has lost nine of its last 11 games. The Rangers have a road trip upcoming next week to Tampa Bay and Kansas City.

Early next week should be very interesting. While the Orioles are at Boston, Texas plays a four-game series at Tampa Bay and Cleveland is at Kansas City for three.

In the chase for that second wild card, Tampa is 1 1/2 games up on Cleveland, two ahead of New York, 2 1/2 games up on the Orioles and 3 1/2 games ahead of Kansas City.

For the Orioles, those six remaining games with Boston figure to be tough to win. A few weeks back, fans were glad to see them on the schedule thinking the Orioles could go head-to-head with the AL East leader and try to catch them. Now they will be must-win games against a very hot club.

Tampa Bay ends its year with four games at home against the Orioles, then six on the road, and the Rays are a 35-38 road club.

Cleveland has the softest schedule, playing its final 10 against Houston, the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota. Every year, it seems a bad team steps up to win games and ruin it for a contender. So don't put those all in the win column for the Tribe yet.

By the way, the Yankees end their season with three games at Houston. How did that happen? End the year with Houston? Strange.

Here are the remaining schedules for Tampa Bay and the four clubs chasing the Rays:

Tampa Bay: Two at Minnesota, four vs. Texas, four vs. Orioles, three at New York Yankees, three at Toronto.

Cleveland: Two at Chicago White Sox, three at Kansas City, four vs. Houston, two vs. Chicago White Sox, four at Minnesota.

New York: Two at Boston, three at Toronto, three vs. San Francisco, three vs. Tampa Bay, three at Houston.

Orioles: Two at Toronto, three at Boston, four at Tampa Bay, three vs. Toronto, three vs. Boston.

Kansas City: Two at Detroit, three vs. Cleveland, three vs. Texas, three at Seattle, three at Chicago White Sox.
Not a real chance for O's and Royals honestly. Between Indians, Yankees, Texas and Rays. Yankees are not that good team but O's choke away three games in the last two innings against them.
