The media in Winnipeg are drooling over Petan. Apparently a lot of the experts that saw him at the Penticton tourney came away very impressed.

I doubt he makes it but it's getting some discussion up in Winnipeg.

Although it sounds like Lindholm could make it with Souray out.

With Gionta being injured and space in the top 9, Sebastian Collberg or Christian Thomas have a real shot at starting the year in Montreal on a line with Plekanecs and Bourque

He'll probably get some games, but I doubt he'll play the whole season in the NHL. Last year he probably shouldn't have been with the team at all, but he played an aggressive game that Torts liked.

This year, he's got a lot more competition for a spot. Lindberg, Fast and Kristo are all older and more experienced. None of them were here last year. Hrivik is older and finally healthy. He could surprise. Miller will be an NHL player, but it may take another year or two for him to become a full time player. He's only just 20.

Most talked-about player at the Habs camp at the moment?
Martin Reway.

Picked in the 4th round in 2013 (!!!).

I guess that might qualify as a surprise. I suspect that Vatanen is their guy, but we'll see how things play out at TC.

With his camp so far i'd put Leblanc ahead of both.

My cousin Josh Jooris was arguably the best player on the ice tonight. 2 Goals and 2nd star of the game. Unreal game

I also thought Reto Berra was excellent in net

These are not touted Canuck picks but will compete for roster spots:

-Darren Archibald (undrafted)- gritty winger with size, and a decent set of mits. 4th line wing
-Peter Andersson (2009 5th round)- top pair in the AHL last year. will maintain that spot or be kept up as a depth defender with the big club (vs Corrado, who has a much higher ceiling, and would require more minutes for development)

There is very early chatter that Shinkaruk will get a 9 game look. I think this qualifies as a surprise.

Thanks for the input. Keep an eye on the situation--he excelled in between Bickell and Kane this morning.

Tampa has a few that could hop some people on the depth chart. Sustr may, Barberio should probably stick with the big club, Drouin, Kucherov may make it impossible to send him down, Palat, Panik...

Martin Reway is pretty impressive at habs training camp but it would be a heck of a surprise if he were to play a regular season game

Considering Montreal is turning away NHLers because they don't have a spot for them, it would be hard pressed to see Reway make it. He'd have to be quite amazing.

Jared Staal and Brendan Woods both sound like they could get extended looks, they bring that physical factor to 4th line roles that the team has needed for a while now. Though with the number of guys that would have to clear waivers it may be a numbers game.

Then again, Bergevin gave a chance to the rookies last year. Galchenyuk, Gallagher made it when they could have signed a UFA forward.

There was at least an opening of sorts for them.

I haven't really followed Jared Staal, but I thought he wasn't even good enough for the AHL.

Yeah, my buddy played on his AAA team in midget and said he wasn't even good enough for trips. I'd be stunned if he made any NHL team.

Pageau (4th, 2011), Prince (3rd, 2011), Stone (6th, 2010) all knocking on the door. All have chances to play offensive roles in the future.

Pageau labelled "gods gift to Ottawa" by anonymous GM after rookie tournament.
