Wait who's doing that? Are you saying the Rangers are only holding off solely because of a waaah factor? I would think it'sto preserve more money on the cap and to make sure that they don't rush into an overpayment with their RFA. I have not had any problems with how they have handled their RFA's in the past either and can't complain about saving cap space despite our inability to properly allocate it to UFA resources. No sense compounding one issue with another

I'm saying I'm doing that!

Maybe that wasn't clear...

I just felt that I listed a ton of hardline arguments when in truth I'd just be relieved to see Stepan signed for ~$3.25M. (Even though I still think he should take less)

I would hope Stepan is signed within 48 hours so he can join the team in Alberta. The Rangers haven't worked on any of their system stuff. The coaches have discussed ideas and concepts but they haven't worked on much. Then the coaches use the skates and scrimmages to see which players get it without needing to practice it 20 times.

I'll be very pleasantly surprised if Step comes in and plays well from the start.

He already had the pressure of keeping up with last year's numbers for twice as many games. Now he's going to have the pressure of being a holdout along with the pressure of everyone blowing up his play and taking it for granted that he's a PPG center now. Also, two top 6 forwards will be out for the start of the season, so if he's not on the top line, he's going to have slim pickings for linemates.

Just seems to me like he's backing himself into a corner in terms of building the expectations on himself in an increasingly complicated and non-ideal situation to start the season.

We'll find out a lot about the player he's going to be in the coming years from the way he reacts to all of this.

The truth of the matter is that we have no idea who's "at fault" if anyone actually is. For all we know, they're moving towards each other and a deal will get done before the western trip.

As of right now, I'm presuming that this will get done eventually and, when it does, I will hold no animosity towards either party. If talks should break down, Slats trades him or he signs an offer sheet... then, I'll read the reports and may or may not get pissed at someone. But for now, frustrating as it is, I really don't see the point in taking sides - and I especially don't see any sense in attacking each other.

Honestly, the current Stepan and Lindberg arguments almost feel like they were fabricated because we don't have anything legitimate to fight about.

Yeah good point.

I think you're right that they've been moving towards each other. First, agreeing on term. Then going from "far apart" to being $500k per year apart.

Jeff Gorton spoke to Craig Custance

Quote:
So how do you identify which players get the bridge and which players to commit to long term?

"That's a tough question," said Rangers assistant GM Jeff Gorton, talking in general terms and not about Stepan. "In this day and age, we have a cap team and having the type of players that we have on our team, making the kind of money we have, sometimes it's circumstance more than the player."

And that's what is happening with the Rangers right now. They clearly like Stepan, but they are squeezed financially, which makes the bridge deal the preferred course of action.

"It has nothing to do with the player, especially in this case," Gorton said. "You have a cap that's going down. Then a bridge becomes a more appealing contract to us. We have to get through this year. That's basically the genesis of it. It's that simple."
http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/blog/...a-negotiations

The Rangers got Matt Oates off the long-term deal for Stepan. The Rangers have too many 4th line no dimensional players making too much money. That's another issue.

Why don't they give him a 1 year deal and then negotiate a long term contract during the season?

If Sather started the negotiations short of 2 years/less than $6M total, hes got some pair of balls on him.

Think Sather has enough on his plate. Plus, you'd get one less year of him on a cheaper deal.

Of course he started at less than $3m per. How exactly do you think he was able to leverage Stepan off the long-term deal?

Less than $6 million is hardly a low ball.

Cut Powe, Pyatt and Asham. That alone frees up 3.5 million.

It would free up $2.775 million. That's if they have no replacements.

Or we can combine their skills and unleash them as 1 super 4th line player! (Assuming the salaries aren't combined).

Combine Powe's hands, Pyatt's drive, and Asham's discipline and we may just have the worst player in the league!
