I wanna see how Weiss is gonna play in a possession system. I also wanna see how he'll play without the puck. Lets hope it's not a Whitney situation and he really buys into being a piece to the puzzle.

Flip was always responsible defensively, and a strong 2 way player.

Should fit in well his 2011-2012 line of Weiss-Versteeg-fleischmann was one of the best lines in the league offensively and a big reason Florida made the playoffs and went 7 games vs NJD. I hope to see him with Datsyuk think he would work really with him

Depends how PP time shakes out for these guys. I expect Weiss to be the better producer there and that should give him his edge in points.

Pretty much this is my thought. I expect Weiss to outproduce Flip by a fair amount this season.

Expect him to play 77 games, score 23 goals, and notch 44 assists for a total of 67 points. Slightly optimistic? Maybe, but Weiss had a career high of 61 points in 2008-09, which is less than my prediction but when you remember that he played for Florida it all makes sense.
yeah right.

weiss has been a captain and #1 centre on lets face it, the worst NHL team since he entered the league, surronded by scrubs for the most part

filppula played his entire career surronded by hall of famers and is a 45pt player and nothing more

give me weiss any day of the week

I would have loved it if he was actually Captain of the Panthers.

The only reason why he was a number one center in Florida was because we never brought in nor drafted anyone to become a number one center. He will fit nicely as a 2nd center for you guys.

He shows up in big games. Game 7 of the 2012 play-offs proved it.

Weiss for me. Filp just didn't grow into a top 6 player like the wings needed him to yet he wanted to be payed as a top 6 player. I am glad the wings rolled the dice on a new direction.

im in a definite minority here, but i have never liked weiss much and would take filppula over him. that said, there seemed to be a need for change. just don't think i'd have gone down the weiss route...

So far at pre-season:

Weiss
3 games, 0+0=0

Filppula
2 games, 0+4=4

IF he plays with Stamkos he gets more. Otherwise Weiss will.

Filppula would have never succeeded here offensively here like he will elsewhere (especially on a team like Tampa Bay)

He doesn't fit the Babcock mold, so he is gone

I don't think Filppula lived up to Babcock's high expectations. Babcock was really high on Flip in FLip's early days.
Something soured last year.

I agree. He fell flat and Babcock just moved on.

Surprised Weiss is running away in the votes, especially considering Filppula is completely out playing him in the pre-season.

I think at the end of the year, Filppula will prove to be the better player and the better bargain for them money. Last year was a down year for Flip, so using last year as an indication how this year will be is pretty ignorant...

KH messed up on this one. He should have thrown money at Flip and kept him!

Fil might be the overall better player than Weiss, but to be honest, I haven't seen enough of Weiss to make an honest comparison yet.

I do think Weiss might be the better piece to help this team get back to being a contender again. This team has enough finesse & skill, but Weiss brings a pretty basic but overall solid set of tools. By no means do I think Filppula was soft, but to me Weiss seems like more of a competitor than Filp. I was at the preseason game last night and Weiss and Nyquist were the only 2 forwards that seemed to be competing hard for pucks.

It will be interesting to see how it shakes out for the Red Wings, and I'm sure Filppula will be very good in Tampa, but that's kind of irrelevant if Weiss makes the Wings a more competitive and balanced team going forward.

In all of my time watching the Red Wings, Filppula is the 3rd player that I can say that I'll truly miss and I wish him success wherever his career takes him. Shanny and Larionov were the other 2 that I hated to see go.

I'm not sold on Weiss being successful in Detroit. I think come playoffs more people than not will screaming about Holland for letting Filppula walk for Weiss.

I always liked FLip, but thought he was overrated at times.
He was never the kind of 2nd line center that would carry the 2nd line. But he was good enough to be a 2nd line center if you had a good winger -- and the Wings, have been short in the talented winger department lately
Around this time last year when I was thinking about post-Datsyuk Detroit, I resigned myself to the idea that we were going to have to play Flip about $5M a year to keep him, and that we probably should.

I held to that notion until Lecavalier was bought out. At that point I advocated playing $5,5M a year for 2 years for VinnyLC.
When we didn't, I was back to Flip.
Until Grabovski was available. I was willing to claim him off waivers.
I saw him as a guy who can play two way center OR ride shotgun to Datsyuk
