Why did we retire players like Bouchard, Geoffrion, Moore, Cournoyer, Lach, Savard and Gainey?

I don't see anything worthy of it. It might be a sacrilege or something, I rispek them.. But I don't know...

Well, come on. Gainey might have been good, but you genuinely believe his career was worth a retired jersey?

Having a discussion about unretiring numbers (it happens once in a while). What do Habs fans think about the prospect of unretiring guys like Elmer Lach or Howie Morenz? What does having the numbers in the rafters mean for you, as fans, if no one you know ever saw them play? Is it meaningful to have those numbers up there for you, and if so, why?

I'm not targeting the Habs in particular or trying to suggest your greats were anything less than greats, you're just such a storied franchise that you're the first to come to mind when I thought of who might have jerseys up there that folks don't know anymore.
I am sorry but being a true Habs fan we do know our heros and what they have done for our team! The number 12 you are talking about belongs to My Lach he is 95 years old he walked done center ice to watch his number raised to the rafters a couple of years and now you are suggesting to un retiring it. We the Montreal Canadiens are know as a class organization and that stems down to multiple things and one being how we treat our ex players especially our stars!

They are retired for a reason and not one of our fans would ok having a number un retire give you an example we had Blake Geoffrion play with us a couple of years ago. His grand father and great grand father are BOOM BOOM Geoffrion and the great Howie Morenz. Usually it would be ok to un retire a number for a family member for that moment even the kid said no and opted for 57 .

So what other teams or fans might consider we the Habs will not!

My whole thesis is that there will come a time, even if it hasn't yet, when folks start to forget who those players were, even with the banner up there to remind them. And when that happens, and folks don't have any passion or appreciation for those players, you might as well take them down.

That will never ever ever happen with Montreal fans my 13 year son knows every single stat for each of the great Habs players THAT IS THE WAY ITS DONE HERE IN MONTREAL. We are not Toronto or Detroit or the Rangers.

We ARE THE MONTREAL CANADIENS!!!! WINNERS OF 24 STANLY CUPS THOSE HEROS WON THOSE FOR US. WE WILL NEVER EVER FORGET THEM!

4 straight Selke Trophies, won 1976 Canada Cup, Conn Smythe winner, 5 time cup winner with the Habs, Inducted in Hockey Hall of Fame, Soviet national team coach Viktor Tikhonov called him the "best all around player in the world."

Obviously you never saw Gainey play.

What a truly ignorant statement.

Yeah I think they should stay retired unless there's a big reason why the team wants to disassociate itself with that player (e.g. some kind of crime or what have you).

I'd like it for the habs to stop retiring jerseys. The centennial has passed. They should come up with a new 'jersey honoring' thing. Maybe you can raise them somewhere apart from the others, but don't retire the number.

It would be very disrespectful to the player to un-retire our numbers

Haven't we run out of jerseys to retire anyway? Roy was pretty much the last big one...don't think we'll see any more for a while. And as much as I like Koivu, I'm not sure he deserves it. At least, not for a long time.

I don't think we could select a few numbers to unretire them, it would be just wrong.

Either we unretire them all, keep them hanging in the rafters and "honor" them like other teams. Or they all stay up there as retired numbers.

At the end of the day, the number the players are wearing doesn't affect their performance, so it doesn't make a difference to me.

Un-retiring Morenz's jersey?! No. Just no. For so many reasons. Lach I don't care about, but that's a recent induction, so ain't nothin' happening there, either.

It will be some time before we retire another, so as far as the Habs are concerned it wont be an issue.

If any of that happened I'd expect the Habs weren't being supported by their fans - so much so to warrant moving the franchise. Few would care...

Now - do you ever see that happening in Montreal? Not in my lifetime, surely - what would replace the Habs?

The only reason I was, and still am, against the retirement of Bob Gainey's number was that the arrogant dunce retired HIS OWN NUMBER. The numbers retired since then have also been a bit superfluous. Bouchard, Lach and Roy - not really "huge" figures in our past like the Rocket or Beliveau, surely you'd all agree?

No.

As for the OP.....ya this sounds like something that would be thought of by the league office or MLSE's new head. So against.

I don't think he got to make that decision or even be part of it.
