I still don't like the dood, but of course it gets retired.

He's who most everyone think of when they hear 'Ottawa Senators'

Simple fact before you vote "no"

Assuming you start working from 25 to 65 years old. That's around 40 years.

How many of you would stay in the same company for 40 years, knowing that there are better opportunities out there?

All of his years of loyal service being the most consistent player while leading the team. Yeah, I could see why you don't like the "dood".

This is a stupid poll. No matter what happened it does not erase the past. It'll get retired once he retires as well. To suggest a rookie would even think of wearing #11 is absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, it should be retired.

He was the longest serving captain in team history. Aside from Yashin, he was the identity of the team. There are some fans who now dislike Alfredsson, or hold a grudge, but ultimately, he is still widely respected as an icon by a majority of the city and the fan base. Not retiring his number as a result of this summer, would only put a further blackening on the situation.

I'd wait a few years until after Alfredsson retires to put up his number, especially if Detroit and Ottawa end up going toe to toe in the playoffs.

So long as Phillips and Neil stick around, they should also have their numbers retired eventually. With the Sens only being around 20 years old, they need to further the building of a culture around the team. Both of Phillips and Neil deserve it for their tenure and their leadership.

Why do I stipulate "If Phillips and Neil stick around" while giving Alfredsson a pass? As much as I like both of them, in the context of the Senators, Alfredsson was and still is a much bigger deal than either of them.

If Spezza and Karlsson end up as life long Senators, they are also shoe ins.....but considering Spezza still has at least a decade left on his career, and Karlsson has almost two, that's getting way ahead of ourselves.

If we win a cup off the back of Anderson playing like he did last season, and he leaves in two years.......I'd still expect his number to be retired, purely because of how important the legacy surrounding the first cup win should be.

Retire it when he retires. Sure, he left. But he has still had the biggest, best impact on the Sens of any player in the team's history. Going to Detroit to try and win a cup isn't enough to put aside everything he's done for this team and this city.

If you have any doubts, just look at Karlsson, and remember that when he first came here, he came in under Alfie's wing.

Alfie may have felt backstabbed when Sens fans started booing him and calling for him to be traded at the start of a season almost a decade ago. He didn't leave then. He didn't walk out on us.

Given everything he's done for the Sens, I'd say he earned the right to finish his career wherever he wants to.

110% yes.

If Alfie's number isn't retired, they'll never retire a number.

People should not even be mad at Alfredsson, it was for the best.

Melnyk said he could not afford both Ryan and Alfredsson... And I'd rather have Ryan given the age of both players

.

Given the quotes in the months before he left, damn right I'm still butt hurt. Screw that guy.

I'm sure time will heal the wounds and I'll be there cheering his # being retired.

Of course 11 is retired.

It's still a bitter pill but he's only gonna end up a red wing fr 1 year, book it.

It gets retired in a couple years.

Exactly.

This is for the better, the current Sens players now have the room to blossom into larger roles. This is key!

I agree. I'm not mad.

I dont want his jersey retired. We already thanked him enough 10 times over. Unfortunately it will be retired one day by some lily livered group of Ottawans, and there is nothing I can do about it.

Completely agree.

Also, the number should absolutely be retired.

I could go either way on retiring his number but if the team does not, that's quite the benchmark a player would need to surpass to get his number retired.

Alfredsson has 1100 points as a Sen and 100 points in the playoffs.

Spezza is 500 points back and he would need to win a cup to surpass Alfredsson.

If Karlsson spends his entire career here then that be a case... But that's a long time from now... Who knows maybe he leaves down the road.

I am cool if they just honor it. That way down the road players can wear those numbers and we dont have to worry about becoming Montreal. I mean. how much longer before they start giving players decimals.

He said in his exit interview that he didn't care about his legacy here. Why should we?

Pat LaFontaine was the first that came to mind, Islanders management treated him like crap, pretty sure the Sabres retired it though.

It looks like Mike Modano hasn't been retired yet by the Stars, but don't think he's in the HHOF yet. He's in the US Hockey Hall of Fame though.

Anyway, yeah, Alfie should get his number retired. You can't blame a guy at the end of a long career heading to greener pastures, whether it's for money or to win.
I wouldn't be upset if Spezza or Ryan or Karlsson left us for another team, maybe it would send a warning flare to management that they need to pay their most important players instead of going on the cheap.
