Oilers ink Staios to four-year extension

This is most likely what the Habs will have to pay to keep Rivet.

Souray will command much more in my opinion.

You stole my thread

I was about to post the same thing. Rivet and Staios are comparable IMO and the Oilers defenceman will have 2.7M per year for the next four season...

You forgot the terms and the link.

The Edmonton Oilers have secured a major piece of their defence corps, signing Steve Staios to a four-year contract extension, worth $10.9-million.

The contract will pay Staios $2.9-million in each of the next two seasons, followed by $2.8-million in 2009-2010 and $2.2-million in 2010-2011.

Good benchmark... if Rivet will take the same deal, sign him right now IMHO.

I dont think so, Staios is a top 4 defence man, playing 20 min a game. Well Rivet is a number 5-6. So I think what he is making now is what he should get, 2-2.3 a year.

I like the fact that the money decreases over time.

Ummmmmm....maybe, but I think he will get more then 2-2.3 a year.

Maybe a three year deal at 7.7 mill. Take that and run with it. He may want even more!

I'm starting to think that the market for these players gets driven by one identifiable skill. Staios, at least in my limited opinion of the guy, is a bit like rivet in that he's just a solid veteran D. Maybe a touch better in some aspects, a touch worse in others, but alike in that neither has a standout skill. Souray gets more because of the shot. PP points will come at a premium. Take away McCabe's pp contribution and is he better than these 2 guys ? granted McCabe's more than a specialist, as is Souray, but it's the one skill that tranlates into $.

So, if we share the GM job, we'd both sign Rivet [though I'd like 2 years at a touch less] and prepare to be universally hated on hf. I'd take the heat.

Ya well that pretty much what he got now, so what would Souray get 5 a year?? Then markov 6??? I mean this make no sence. I find we dont have that great of a defence but yet we cant even keep them??

I dunno. Right now, Rivet is making 2.47M$/year (nhlpa.com). And be honest, he is playing his best hockey since last 2 seasons. I doubt he'll take the same amount since he clearly is a leader and is better than when he got his last contract...

But maybe he'll sign cheap to stay here. We'll see.

Souray's comparable is McCabe and Markov's is Kaberle. I'm guessing they'll get similar deals.

Similar, but I was thinking Souray will get a little less [10-20%] and Markov may get what Kaberle did, [4.25 ?]. I think at the going rate for d men, Kaberle may be a bit underpaid, I'd easily pick him over McCabe and that has nothing to do with Kaberle's hot streak.

I don't think that Rivet will take a paycut. He has no reason to do that since he's playing a better game right now. Staois may have more upside BUT he doesn't have the half of Rivet leadership.

IMO:

Rivet will ask 3M$
Souray will ask for at least 4M$
Markov will get between 4.5-5M$

Kaberle recieved a 4,75M contract, that seems like fair value for both Souray and Markov. Then again, neither are proven commodities like Kaberle is, so even though I wouldnt be surprised if they got more, I wouldn't be surprised if they got less either. I think the McCabes and Jovanovsky's of this league get overpaid often, it's what's scaring me in regards to Souray. I like him, but is he worth more then 4M? Was he well rounded like McCinnis or Blake we're, I'd say yes, but when he doesn't score, he can make the team look very bad.

Staios probably took less money than he could have received and signed at this stage, because he absolutely loves Edmonton. He is a community guy, and really speaks highly about the city. His blue collar workrate works in well with the persona of this city, and he is absolutely comfortable in having to raise a family here. I think Rivet probably feels the same way about Montreal, and it wouldn't surprise me if he took similar money, for the similar reasons. I would like to get at least one of our UFA defenseman tied up before the summer, and I think Rivet would probably be that guy.

McGuire said the other night that he spoke with one of the 3 UFA d-men on the Habs (wouldn't say which one) and he said "I've never been a UFA before, this is my first chance and I'd like to see what I'm worth on the free market"

I don't think it was Markov...And to be honest, I get the feeling it's Rivet.

If I had to take a guess, then I'd guess Rivet aswell.

Glad I'm not crazy.

Souray is always talking about how he loves it here and loves the team...Rivet, I've never heard him say that.

Yeah but Kaberle got signed for cheap, so imo Markov will receive offers of more than 5M aka he's at least worth Kubina.

do we really want to sign a 5th defenseman at almost 3 millions per year?

To think Rivet does not love Montreal is crazy, he is Koivu's best friend, has never worn another uniform, was given a rousing applause when he was drafted in the Forum.

But maybe your right, I would be shocked if he left Montreal though.

Hogwash. Rivet averages 22:30 minutes a game. Staios averages 21.44. They are roughly equal in the depth department.

If even Rivet considers leaving, anyone on our team could leave. Did he not learn anything from Quintal? Oh well, as long as he said "I'd like to see what I'm worth" instead of "I'd like to go to whoever pays me the most", then that's fine. I'd like to see what I was worth too. Doesn't mean I'd take an extra 1/2 Million to play in Columbus.... (Poor Columbus)

I'd be surprised if it wasn't Rivet. Rivet has some connections with TSN, namely Pierre McGuire.
