Keep in mind that his numbers stayed pretty consistent despite struggling with an ab issue.

He was on pace for 22 goals, 26 assists (if a full reason were played) plays both sides of the ice, and is used in a lot of roles.

did Matt Read start playing on the fourth line before he move up the lineup?

He was playing solid hockey before he hurt his ribs/abdomen, then he came back a couple weeks early because he wanted to contribute to the team as they were fighting for a playoff spot.

Elliotte Friedman made a note in his 30 thoughts about that, and how GM's around the league were impressed with Read's character while clearly playing in pain.

If the cap goes up to $70 million and the Flyers put all of Pronger's cap hit on LTIR in 14-15, they will have around $17 million to sign BSchenn, two defensmen and a goalie. That means they probably won't be looking to sign any expensive netminders, but the Bryzgalov debacle probably put them off doing that again anyway.

Great deal for both sides. Read could have probably got more in the FA market if he has another good year but I like his decision to stay with the flyers

Nope. Hes been for the most part on the 3rd line in his time here while playing 2nd unit PP and 1st unit PK. Last year when all the injuries hit he got a lot of playing time with Giroux.

But you see, this continually putting Pronger on LTIR has its problems. It's possible that Schenn, Couturier and Laughton's bonuses are achieved and thus your cap next year will be lower than other teams.

Then, if you do the same next year with Pronger, you have the same problem for the following year.

The idea that LTIR is free money and thus is a good strategy to use is totally misguided.

Really like Read's game, reminds me of Glencross. Awesome deal for the Flyers.

That's a damn good deal for a versatile top six forward (should he stay healthy).

Same thing that happened with Voracek, Simmonds, and Couturier.

I know it's not free, but the vast majority of Schenn and Couturier's bonuses are practically unreachable.

In the third year of Schenn's contract, he doesn't have to play the 25 minutes in all regular season games to earn a handsome $1.5 million dollar bonus, but to qualify he would have to have an All-Star season, finish among the league's point leaders and win a major award.
And next season only Laughton among the forwards will have an ELC contract, and the maximum bonus is only $212,500. This season he has no performance bonus.

Good to have Matt Read. Does Holmgren understand cap management. Hextall needs to pull him aside. #AtTheInsanity

Players with a lot of versatility are always good to have on a team to fill gaps created by injuries/players underperforming. High end tweeners like Peverly or Read usually get paid.

Laughton may not make the team. Schenn's bonuses are something like playing over 20 minutes a night and winning a major award or something like that. I don't remember Couturier's but odds are we'll be fine. After this season only Laughton will be the only one with bonuses so all we have to worry about is this season and quite frankly I don't foresee it being an issue.

Edit: This is what I was talking about

too many people on HF are like Pavlovian Dogs. They see Flyers and contract in the same sentence and automatically spout off about "bad contract".

This is a nice deal in length and dollars even if Read just continues on his current production. If he can put up 25 goals plus the deal is a steal.

Read reminds me of Ray Whitney.

Holmgren is good at signing forwards and terrible at signing defenseman and goalies.

I guess it all depends on leverage.

Matt Read is a good player.

Fair deal for both sides. As far as Timonen goes, he has not said he will be gone after this season. He also didn't take a massive pay cut this season so we don't know what will happen next year.

I think it's a fine deal, and the length of the term is acceptable. I just look at the cap situation and shake my head. I love Matt Read and he's worth that deal.
