Found on article on Dean Arsene, one of the defensemen in on a PTO. Sounds like a minor league veteran that wants to end his career at home. Arsene has a pair of Calder Cup rings and has been the captain of 4 different AHL teams.

Quote:
"I'm kind of getting toward the end of my career, and my agent and I just decided to focus on playing here," Arsene said Friday, following the Abbotsford Heat's first official training camp practice. "This is really the only place I wanted to play."
Quote:
"He said, 'Hey, my wife and kids live here, and I'd really like to play in Abby,'" Ward recounted.

But with the NHL parent Calgary Flames in rebuilding mode and making plans to assimilate a bumper crop of rookie pros at the AHL level, Arsene had to wait to see if there would be a fit for him in Abbotsford.

He waited, in fact, until Wednesday just two days before the Heat training camp opened when he got a call from Craig Conroy, the Flames' special assistant to the GM, offering a pro tryout contract.

"This isn't a business where we just reward hometown people . . . that's not the way the world works in professional hockey," Ward noted. "But because of Dean's past, his character, his leadership . . . he just represents everything you'd want.

"He's a guy who wants to live and breathe the colours and represent the city, and that's a win-win. We'll see what happens with the whole thing, but right now, he's getting an opportunity, and I'm happy for him."
Quote:
"With the young crew here, I'm just trying to bring a veteran presence and help teach the young guys," said Arsene, who suited up for 13 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers in 2009-10.

"I keep it simple, play hard, try to do the little things right, and lead by example. I'm trying to do that from Day 1 and turn the tryout into a contract.

"Ever since the team came into Abbotsford, I always wanted to play here . . . it would be a dream."

From the Arsene piece there were comments about Steve Begin at the end. Sounds like he will be joining the Heat when he is healthy.

Quote:
It's not hard to see that the Heat could use someone of Arsene's ilk. Steve Begin, a 35-year-old centre who has 524 NHL games under his belt, was signed late last month to provide some veteran seasoning on an otherwise youthful roster, but he was injured during Flames training camp and Ward doesn't know when he'll be available.

Great job on the thread Abby!

Obviously that Heat line-up will look significantly better once the Flames make more cuts

A few off-season tidbits on the Heat.

..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .....

With Ryan Pinder moving on to join theFAN in Calgary they have a new play by play guy in Brandon Astle who had been working as the play by play man for the BCHL's Langley Rivermen.

http://www.abbynews.com/sports/heat/news/219312941.html

I am not a fan of Astle, I hate his voice and how is even more over the top than Rob Kerr.

..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .....

As well all known by now, Robbie Ftorek was added as an assistant coach.

http://www.abbynews.com/sports/heat/news/218736261.html

I love this move. He is good for young players.

..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .....

The AHL has seen some realignment........ yet again.

They are now in the "West Division" with Oklahoma City, San Antonio Rampage, Texas Stars and the........ Charlotte Checkers?

http://www.abbynews.com/sports/heat/news/215685581.html

I still haven't figured out what the hell the AHL was thinking here. How is Charlotte in the west? Absolutely ridiculous.

Then to add to the AHL's stupidity, the league has scheduled Utica to play Abbotsford 12 times in 2013-14, yet the Heat only play "division rival" 4 times.

Switch Byron and Elson and I like it and then Byron and Nemisz. Elson isn't ready for top line AHL duty imo and we need to give Nemisz a chance to rebound from last year sticking him on the 4th line again is just a waste. I also don't think Olson will be at center in the top 9 over Jooris.

he won't be ahead of Street either, Street is a legit top 6 AHL centerman, and he may be pushed down as far as the 3rd line but no further.

I have updated the 'roster' to include number, height, weight... etc. I will do my best to keep this updated and once the season starts I will try and keep it updated with statistics as well.

Abbotsford Heat win their only pre-season game 5-2

I was unable to listen to the game, but using twitter goals were scored by the following:

1. Abbotsford - Brett Olson (Ben Hanowski)
2. Abbotsford - Peter Civak (Dean Arsene, Mark Cundari)
3. Abbotsford - Ben Hanowski PP (Brett Olson, Drew McKenzie)
4. Utica - Alex Biega (Sacha Guimond)
5. Abbotsford - Dean Arsene (Brett Olson, Peter Civak)
6. Utica - Kellan Tochkin (Darren Archibald)
7. Abbotsford - Ben Hanowski EN (Unassisted)

..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .....

There was also 7 fights:

Brett Lyon vs. Mitch Elliot
Dean Arsene vs. Mitch Elliot
Carter Bancks vs. Jesse Mychan
Brett Lyon vs. Jesse Mychan
Brett Lyon vs. Jesse Mychan
David Eddy vs. Mitch Elliot
Turner Elson vs. Ben Schmidt

..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... ..... .....

Sounds like each Ortio and Brossoit allowed 1 goal and played very well.
