A frontloaded 11-year deal?

Thanks for this. I needed a good laugh this morning.

how can you compare Thornton's potential contract to Carter's, in which he signed during the old CBA?

Carter signed his heading into the prime of his career, while Thornton is signing his in the twilight of his

I think he'll get a 3 yr. deal at 5.5 million a season.

His brother is his agent, and his brother doesn't like long meetings. I think Coutures contract took a 15 minute meeting to negotiate.

I'd sya DW offers 3 x 6 (18m) and they accept. Before he is 35.

Kinda off topic but I wonder if Jumbo Joe will hit 500 goals.

As a Kings fan I love this guy, great hardworking player.

when does he turn 35? remember, it's when the contract kicks in, not when they sign it

I was looking on cap geek and noticed that his birthday is July 2, 1979 (so he will turn 35 this year)...so I guess this next contract will be a 35+ contract?

His current AAV is $7m so I would guess he won't insist on that again. At the same time, he is still a fantastic player (and is currently playing at a very high level, especially when you consider his age). I looked up his numbers on Elite Prospects and noticed (I hadn't picked up on this before) that he plays almost all the games every year, he doesn't seem injury prone.

So what is in Thornton's contract future?

I know he is from Southern Ontario, perhaps he is waiting to fulfill a dream of ending his career playing for the Leafs (just as Tavares, Pietrangelo, Stamkos, and Subban hope to do one day).
That's just offensive!

July 2nd

Technically he won't be a 35+ contract if UFA day is July 1st next year.

3 years/5.67mil (6,6,5) I wouldn't think to be out of the question.

I'd give him 6m for 3 years...and even a 4th if he were insistent.

He's still got it and is consistently just about the healthiest guy in the NHL.

wow, talk about a lucky break for SJ

As long as they sign him before July 2nd, it won't be a 35+ contract

No, Joe will not be a 35+ yo player.

The 35+ yo rule is based on the players age on June 30. Joe misses the cutoff by two days.

Might want to do a discount double check on your math there.

It'd never happen, but he'd be awesome in Edmonton.

He loves SJS and they love him. Seems like an easy deal to sign to me. 6 Mill to 6.5 mill AVG

Ask Glen Sather. Thornton tickles himself to sleep thinking about playing alongside his good buddy, Rick Nash.

Thornton will definitely be kept for whatever he wants barring absurdity. It's Marleau that I'm a tiny bit worried about.
