Yeah.. and What a wake-up :

Period 2
Toronto - Jani Rita (Mathieu Roy, J.J. Hunter) 16:31
Toronto - Jani Rita (J.J. Hunter, Nate DiCasmirro) 17:51

He floats around a little, doesnt do much in his last 4 games.. then boom.... 2 goals in less than 2 minutes on 2 shots and he finishes the game +2. This guy is a finisher with a defensive side......something Oilers obviously dont need this year.

But Im not even going to mention the fact that he Really should have gotten a look by now.. or that he should get one soon. Im tired of doing that. Lowe has already decided that he hates Jani and will most likely include him as a spare part in some future deal, only to have the Satan situation repeat.

Official press release

Roadrunners defeat Penguins

January 14, 2004

WILKES-BARRE, PA - Michael Morrison made 36 saves in his first start since December 19 as the Toronto Roadrunners defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 5-2 at Wachovia Arena on Wednesday night.

The Roadrunners scored on their first shot of the game when forward Nate DiCasmirro broke in alone and beat Penguins netminder Andy Chiodo at 12:23 of the first period. Michel Ouellett scored with Wilkes-Barre on the power play at 15:54 of the opening frame to even the score at one. Toronto would regain the lead before the end of the period when Joe Cullen potted his fifth of the season just after a Roadrunners power play expired with 1:46 remaining in the first.

Jani Rita scored his ninth and tenth goals of the year in the second period to give Toronto a three-goal lead. Penguins forward Shane Endicott was awarded a penalty shot and tried to beat Roadrunners goaltender Michael Morrison through the five hole but was stopped. It was the first penalty shot faced by a Roadrunners goaltender in franchise history.

Penguins forward Kris Beech cut Toronto's lead to two goals when he scored his eleventh of the season at 7:07 of the third period. Tony Salmelainen rounded out the scoring, potting his eleventh of the season at 13:43.

Roadrunners forwards J.J. Hunter and Joe Cullen each with one goal and one assist, both recorded the first multipoint games of their AHL careers. Jani Rita (two goals) and Nate DiCasmirro (one goal, one assist) also had multipoint games for Toronto.

Between the pipes, Michael Morrison recorded his fifth win of the season for the Roadrunners and was named the game's first star. Andy Chiodo began the game for Wilkes-Barre, but was replaced at the start of the second period by Martin Brochu, before returning to the net for the third period. Brochu suffered the loss.

The Roadrunners were 0 for 5 on the power play, while the Penguins were 1 for 7.

The Toronto Roadrunners next action takes place Friday, January 16, when they travel to Syracuse to face the Crunch.

The Roadrunners next home action will take place on Sunday, January 25, when they host the Rochester Americans at 5:00 p.m.

Tickets for all Roadrunner home games are available at the Ricoh Coliseum Box Office, at all TicketMaster outlets by calling TicketMaster at (416) 872-5000 or on the Internet by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.

Maybe do more in 11 games than get 2 assists and go -7?

Frankly, he hasn't been called up yet because he doesn't deserve to be called up.
Isn't it obvious that Rita needs to be more consistent. If he can't score consistenly in the AHL, what makes you think he could be better in the NHL?

That's probably true. However, a possibility could be that he's a little beyond that level and feels no motivation to play there. There's no discounting his ability, and maybe if he got a run with the big club he would elevate his game to where it should be. He seemed to score at a decent clip in the games he played at the NHL level, considering his ice time and lack of experience.

That lack of consistency is the reason he has not got a shot. As you said he floats, no doubt he has the talent but he will NEVER be successful in the NHL unless he learns to work hard every night.

An effort once every five or six games is not going to cut it in the NHL.

Um sorry but shouldn't making into to the NHL be enough to motivate him every night??

So the Oilers should reward players that float and only play when they feel like it a shot in the NHL?

IMO he has a lot of talent but he lacks some heart and this first played it's ugly head when he sulked after he got returned to Hamilton last year. (This was mentioned by the coaching staff in an interview last year) he then rebounded and had a great playoff

I also remember how he had a good start here but then became invisible and then got sent down.

Every one seems to have forgotton that. If he disapears during AHL games why does everyone thing he will suddenly learn to work hard at the NHL level?

Talent is not everything. Not comparing the two, but Jason Bonsignore had all the talent in the world. It is not enough!

AT one point this season, Rita was playing like a monster. Maybe he got discouraged when he wasn't called up. That doesn't say alot about his mental toughness, but mental toughness usually improves as one gets older. You can't, however, suddenly gain talent.

he got 3 goals and 1 assist in 12 games last year.

in a full season, that'll translate to 20 G and 7 A....I think he deserves a 10 game trial to see what else he's got. I personally don't want to give up on him without watching him for a few more games in th NHL.

I agree, while Rita shouldn't be given an NHL job on a silver platter he should be given a 10 game tryout, his contract's up this year and we're still not really sure what we have on our hands with this guy...is he a top 6 forward or not? Rita was supposed to get a callup during this last road trip, but the plan was scrubbed after Smith's injury. So will he get it after Gator gets back in the next week or so?

Semenov and Bergeron weren't dominating by any stretch when they were in the minors, yet they got callups and have had extended auditions...I think it's fair to say that Semenov has progressed especially well as time's progressed. MAB still has a bit of a jury out on him, but he's shown skills that this dman core need, and has shown that the physical side of the position can be handled as well as can be expected for a guy his size.

One big problem though...this audition should've happened in the first half of the year, back when the Oilers had more margin for error. I'd be surprised to see them call up any young guys at this point unless a heap of injuries happen.

I'll be very curious to see if Lowe offers Rita a one-way contract this offseason, assuming he's still Oiler property at that point.

Almost anyone would have trouble finding consistency in the scoring department playing with the likes of J.J. Hunter and Nate Dicasmirro. The line of Sarno, Salmo and Rita was lighting it up a few weeks ago. Then Sarno disappeared for a few games (?).

It's good to see that Tony has 11 goals, he must have gone on a streak recently. From what I've heard he creates a lot of chances but has trouble finishing. He's got NHL hustle which has been good enough to get half the Minnesota Wild's roster in the league, it will work for him eventually.

He deserves a real chance to prove himself with the Oil.Wasn't the reason the Oil gave up on Satan the same as we are hearing about Rita?Never hear anyone say he is in a slump if he doesn't score for a couple of games it's that he isn't trying! It has to be frustrating for him not to get a fair chance when he is by far a better player then some of MacT favorites.

well i think that the oilers need to find out what they have in rita before this contract is up, and him playing in the AHL isnt going to tell you this, even if he scores 3 goals a game down there... he is obviously one of the more skilled guys in the system, to just let that kind of talent slip through your hands would be foolish at best..... at a time when the oilers need scoring, i just dont see why they dont give a guy a 10-15 game tryout and see what hes like

im not saying that rita will even *help* the oilers, but rather we need to see if hes worth hanging on to or not.... its has been a few years since we drafted him afterall, so it would be nice for us to at least know someting about him
