I'd say a Ryan Sutter-esq player in the making. I hope the Oilers aren't in a position to draft him, but if they are he's a no brainer.
Maybe they can trade up?

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Consensus Rankings based on what's available so far. I feel like the Oil will likely be picking 8-14, will likely take a while to get Eakins systems in, and Nuge might miss a month to start the season. If that's the case, as it sits now they'd be in a position to potentially pick Dal Colle, Virtanen or Clarke, all of whom seem like they'd be good fits.
Can someone tell me why he's getting so much hype other than him being WHL first overall? He plays a power game, but he seems too small to make full use of it at the NHL level, see: Brule, Gilbert. His hands/playmaking, from my limited viewings, are average at best.

Virtanen has 3" and 10lbs on Brule right now.

I'm not really sure that comparison fits.

I dont think he is small. He sure doesnt play like it. One of the strongest players out there, never mind for his age. Ive seen him rag doll Griffin Reinhart. Threw him around like he wasnt even there.

I do agree about his hands/scoring/playmaking based on my viewings also.

Leon Draisaitl or Jake Virtanen

Ok, this is wishful thinking but let's say either player fall to the 10-20 range in the 2014 draft. Which one would YOU choose and why. Both are C/LW so what line combos would better suit the Oilers long term.

Option 1:
Hall - Nuge - Ebs
Virtanen - Gags- Yak

Or

Hall-Nuge-Ebs
Gags-Virtanen-Yak

Option 2:

Hall-Nuge-Ebs
Draisaitl-Gags-Yak
Or
Hall-Nuge-Ebs
Gags-Draisailt-Yak

Side note: If either plays C and replaces Gagner which would be in 3 years as I like what he brings. Perron/Zharkov could end up 2LW

If we are in position to draft one of them I like Leon Draisaitl a bit better but both will be excellent prospects.

From what I've read, Virtanen is another speed demon and has a very good skill set and only knock on Draisaitl is his speed

OT but

@JeffMarek
Only preseason but Connor McDavid with 1g 5a in a 6-3 Erie win over Niagara. If your fav NHL team is bad, hope they're REALLY bad in 2015.

I expect Florida to still be awful in 2 years... they'd be my early prediction for the #1 pick in 2015.

Add to it that Niagara is a VERY young team this year, and our #1 d-man (potential 2014 first round pick) Haydon is out for a month.

That said, I see Erie more than any other team in Niagara. The kid is the real deal, and I hear Strome Jr. may be even more special than his brother. The two will be fun to watch over the next tow seasons, and could be a 1-2 punch in the 2015 draft.

Bob McKenzie came out with his preseason Top-15 for the 2014 NHL Entry Draft. You can find it here.

T1. Sam Reinhart, C
T1. Aaron Ekb;ad, RD
3. William Nylander, LW
4. Leon Draisaitl, C/LW
5. Sam Bennett, C
T6. Jake Virtanen, RW
T6. Nick Ritchie, LW
8. Kasperi Kapanen, RW
9. Michael Dal Colle, LW/C
10. Jakub Vrana, LW
T11. Anton Karlsson, RW
T11. Haydn Fleury, LD
13. Nick Schmaltz, C
14. Ivan Barbashev, C
15. Roland McKeown, RD
HM. Adrian Kempe, LW
HM. Matt Mistele, C

ISS also came out with their September rankings

Some thoughts...

- I don't feel there's alot of consenus among the top. Alot more ties in McKenzie's rankings. Sounds like the draft is very compacted with talent that isn't as high end as the one that just passed.

- I think Draisaitl will stay within the Top-5. The not-so-secret is out.

- From an Oiler perspective, Almost assuredly I think we'll aim for a center and I'm looking at prospects projected out of the Top-10. I'd be keeping stock on Ivan Barbashev, Jared McCann, Matt Mistele, and Conner Bleackley.

I dunno why but I can't help compare Draisaitl to Niño. I'm looking forward to seeing him play when PA visits the Oil Kings to see, but they both seem to have a similar style and backstory with all the hype from the World Jrs.

If you look on hockeydb, he's 5'11, 180 lbs, which is "smaller" than Brule (not that he's actually that tall), but if you take the effort to look on the WHL site, he's 6'1, 210 lbs. People just need to use a more accurate resource

Give me DAL COLLE... 6'2 LW...four points the other night... he would be perfect for 2nd line...

Yes we have Perron now... but gives us options long term... if Perron blows up in the last year of his deal... well we have a big strong 20 year old winger ready to jump in on cheap deal... not a bad problem to have folks... look at CHI and Saad

for fun...

Dal Colle keeps it going... 7 points two games... first star in both... think he is the answer for us on the left side...

Also need to get Nurse back to SSM... they won huge the other night (10-3)... oly weakness right now is a thoroughbred D... Nurse could be 50-60 point guy this year with McCann Tolchinsky Fritsch Mallette Hughes to get pucks to

I'll be interested to see if they move Dal Colle back to center. Not that I'd bypass him if he remained on LW, but I feel our center depth in the prospect pool and in the organization is mighty lacking in size down the middle.

Jared McCann scored 4 goals for the Sault that game. Our scouts should get a good look at him when they visit Nurse.

TSN Has McCann's 4 goals up.

Speaking of guys scouts see when watching our picks... Everett has some big boys up front beside Khaira...

http://whl.ca/roster/show/id/8951

Hopefully they play together play well... could be a nice pick next year...

Two things I got from that article. One is we probably see 1sts being moved around with the lack of high end talent.

Second, how cool is it for the Nylander's and Kapanen's to be able to play with their sons/dads?

The draft board always seems to have a way of not matching up with our needs, but this year (assuming we're still picking in the top half of the draft), it looks like the early consensus is that it's more heavily weighted towards forwards at the top end (Ekblad being the obvious exception), most of whom having size on their side.

There are a ton of interesting players in this draft actually. It looks pretty deep.
