The whole thing is a joke. Not defending Scott. But you don't use your stick in any situation.

Wow, Kessel is such a little *****. Now, bush move on Scott's part, but still...can't swing the stick like that. Honestly the initial swing wasn't that terrible, but the second one was just awful. Give him a couple games for that chicken****.

Then he comes back to poke at Scott while he's tied up, not quite a spear but close enough. Obviously he can't control his emotions and doesn't use his brain when scared.

wow lol. Swinging his stick like that. You know, as morbid as this is to say, if you're going to use a stick, don't use it like that

Maybe I wasn't fully paying attention, but what did Scott do wrong?

TOR's David Clarkson will get auto 10 regular season game suspension for coming off bench to fight. No doubt about that one.

Clarkson and Clowe are in a bloody fight for the worst contract of the off season. Clowe with an early injury, nothing series but a sign of things to come and Clarkson missing 1/8 of the season and not helping the leafs start with a full roster.

Does his salary still count against the cap? I'm assuming so.

I think you guys are excepting way too much out of Jagr and Clowe. I'm curious what was said about NYR when we acquired Clowe. I'd be surprised if Clowe even plays a full season, let alone puts up goals. Good teams don't depend on luck; I wonder how much of 12-13 was "bad luck", and how much was Parise's absence. Parise, Kovalchuk, Clarkson: that's your top 3 goalscoring threats gone in one calendar year.

Knowing the Devils, though, Larsson will turn into a star, Elias will have a Selke-calibre year, and Schneider will get a Vezina nomination. I think Lou has been spiking the kool-aid.

I know the game isn't played on paper, but look around the Met. Flyers will be better. Pens will still be atop. Blue Jackets have a nice team, Vezina winner, added Gaborik. Canes will be better if healthy. Islanders...I think they'll be good, but we'll see how losing Streit affects them. Capitals got worse, I think, but Ovechkin could carry that team on his back to the playoffs. Rangers will be better. I'm hesitant to say the Devils got better by adding Schneider, yet, as he's never played more than 33 games in a season. Clarkson, Kovy, even Poni was good for the Devils.

Yes, caphits are still in effect during suspensions.

The player is still paid by the team, but that money is put into the 'NHL Players Emergency Assistance Fund'.

That being said, Clarkson's contract isn't that large for the upcoming season. For 2013-2014, Clarkson is actually being paid 4.5 million. However, 3.5 million was in the form of a signing bonus, so that won't be subject to suspension pay withholding. In effect, Clarkson is making 1 million during the season.

If David Clarkson was suspended 10 regular season games, it would presumably cost him ~121k (although that's not the exact amount, as it's based off playing days, and not games).

This is another MAJOR bonus for receiving the bulk of your salary in signing bonuses, as it limits your exposure to suspension salary loss.

This. Especially in an olympic year, Kessel should behave like a pro, not a savage with a club. I don't want someone who would behave like that representing USA.

What business does he have going after Kessel? Oh, he's pissed because Tropp stupidly decided to drop the gloves with a much bigger Devane, and ended up getting hurt? Come on. Scott received an instigator, and I'd expect him to pick up a fine as well.

The Leaf fans are making a WAY too big of a deal that it was specifically Kessel he went after.

First of all, an instigator is an instigator. In the eyes of the law it was no different from Orr going after Kaleta later.

Secondly, to me it feels like he would've gone after whoever lined up next to him at the face-off. It just happened to be Kessel. That is mostly on Carlyle for sending out the Kessel line in that situation.

Kessel was an idiot for swinging his stick like that, especially the two incidents when he did it unprovoked. The way out of it would have been to turtle and let the refs deal with it.

On that note, fighting an unwilling player needs to get 20+ game suspensions. Carkner trying to murder Boyle in the 2012 playoffs was brutal to see. I can't believe coming off the bench is ten games, but jumping a guy and continue wailing on him when he is down is like one game.

Just as a preemptive notice--please don't turn this into a "merits of fighting in hockey" thread. We've been there, done that a million times and this thread is not the place for it.

There's no way Clowe plays a full season...it's hard enough to do that if you aren't injury prone and play a rough game, but with his history...

Also, I think Jagr will be good for some nice times early in the season, especially on the PP, but he'll burn out by the mid point

I expect the Devils will still be tough to play against though, the question will definitely be whether they can score at all.

I'm not seeing the problem with the first whack. If I'm the Leafs, there is NO WAY I want Kessel dropping his gloves with John Scott. Does anyone not remember Gaborik dropping his gloves with Carcillo? That was ****ing Dan Carcillo, a guy who would literally get killed by John Scott. Chop down that tree.

And as @jprutherford says, it's $1.5 million on the one-year deal for Morrow. Bargain for the Blues for that caliber of player

Of course Kessel isn't supposed to go with Scott. But he can't two-hand him either.

Turtle or run in that situation. I don't think Scott is so stupid that he'd wail on Kessel when he is down on the ice.

That's the problem and why the Carkner suspension set a dangerous precedent. If Carkner had gotten 15 games for jumping Boyle, Kessel would've felt pretty safe just trying to run away/turtle since Scott wouldn't have dared to go after an unwilling participant.

Uh, again, if I'm on the Leafs, I don't care what Kessel does, just keep him further than arms reach away.

Why don't you think that? He was out for blood, what does he care?

First point:

I'm not looking at this from a Leaf's perspective, I'm looking at it from a league perspective. Kessel needs to sit for a few games, like 4+. We need to stop using different rulebooks for different players (repeat offenders is another thing, I'm talking about player "types" and protecting stars). He was using his stick as a weapon.

Second point:

Scott was just looking to start something, I highly doubt he'd beat Kessel into a pulp. He was just grabbing whoever was next to him to get things going. It happened to be Kessel, but I don't think he counted on being engaged with Kessel for long and expected someone else to jump in.
