48 NHL contracts(1-way and 2-way)for the 2013-2014 season, including Marc-André Cliche and the recently signed Chris Bigras.

Capgeek shows 49 w/o Cliche including Bigras. So I think we're at the max of 50. Still retaining Vincour and Walker's rights too iirc.

Vincour and Walker are not under contract, only qualified so the Avs maintain their right(s). That doesn't count under the 50 contracts maximum.

And if I'm not mistaken, Bigras only counts if he plays 10 games or more in the NHL this season. Same with MacKinnon (slide risk) but MacKinnon will get the 10gp for sure.

According to capgeek the Avs are sitting at 47 contracts.

http://www.capgeek.com/avalanche/reserve-list/

Edit: I'm not seeing Cliche on the list, so I guess 48.

Why does the waiver claim of a barely-on-the-cusp NHLer automatically mean someone else is getting shipped out?

I don't get it. It's preseason. Bring all the competition you can to play.

Most of the roster spots are already taken. Cliche earns $550k this season, which is a lot to pay if you only plan on playing him in the minors.

With that being said, Cliche was the captain of his QMJHL team and his AHL team, and could have been brought in just for him leadership and character.

Didn't we pay the guy from the Smyth trade like $3M to play in the minors though? $550K is pocket change to me.

I'd rather have more than less players, especially this early in camp. Screw these guys with their "guaranteed roster spots". We were one of the worst teams in the league last year. The only thing guaranteed should be a pink slip if you don't perform.

It is less than the Avs are likely to pay Olver to play in the minors. Olver is set to make 650k.

I agree. I think it'll be good that even Mac has the illusion he has to earn his spot.

But that 3 million from the kings was more cap coming back to counter the Smyth dump. He was also a Hail Mary that he may recapture his one hit wonder season. Can't even remember his name.

hahaha I couldn't remember it either. Remember when we heard the trade and we thought he might play on the active club (even as a 5th/6th d-man)? That was funny.
