You're right, for some reason I thought he'd resigned w/ the Barons at the same time we signed Stretch.

I think that leaves us with a hole at 3/4 center (VV's old job) and at least one quality AHL defenseman. Would like to see one more quality AHL winger (I don't think Kessey or Ewanyk are anywhere near ready for this level, but they'll probably both get a shot).

He'll be a very useful player for you guys. He's got a ton of skill and a little edge to his game that I think will really look good on your 2nd line, plus he has a managable cap number and is still young. If he stays healthy it wouldn't surprise me at all for him to get 25/60 next year.

I'm pretty happy with MPS on the Blues, I think he fits Hitch's system better than Perron did and he has some upside that I think we can help him tap into.

I really like the signings that the Oilers/Barons have made over the last week. The team is pretty much full now (I think) and is looking like an excellent AHL club. Plenty of NHL caliber prospects and a bunch of top quality but not ancient AHL guys.

I think it will look something like this on opening night:

Ryan Hamilton / Mark Arcobelllo / Toni Rajala
Derek Nesbitt / Andrew Miller / Matt Ford
Wil Acton / CJ Stretch / Ben Eager
Curtis Hamilton / Ryan Martindale / Tyler Pitlick
Eric Lizon

Martin Marincin / Larsen or Potter
Taylor Fedun / Brad Hunt
Brandon Davidson / Oscar Klefbom
Lee Moffie

Bachmann/Roy

Still not sure who the 14th+ forwards will be, suspect they'll sign a few bodies as I doubt they'll want any of the rookies as healthy scratches.

Those top 3 lines look really good to me. The 4th line would have been a mess the last two years but it at least has some potential. Assuming we get one NHL guy (Larsen or Potter?), Fedun is back, and Klefbom is competent the defense looks decent. I'd like to see one more veteran added back there but they'll probably wait until injuries/callups/whatever happen during the season.

There is no way Pitlick is playing fourth line this year. Also if Klefbom is going to be playing in the AHL he is going to be playing a lot of minutes. I think the Barons really need to start being used more to develop prospect rather than trying to win fans. For that reason Eakins was considered before Neleson was for the coaching job.

A few Barons updates, it has been a while:

Signed Austin Fyten, had a good year in the ECHL last year at age 21.

Signed former Bruins prospect Nicholas Tremblay, good depth signing at center.

I think the lines will probably shake out something like this, assuming that both Arcobello and Lander make the Oilers out of camp:

Ryan Hamilton / Andrew Miller / Toni Rajala
Matt Ford / CJ Stretch / Derek Nesbitt
Wil Acton / Nicholas Tremblay / Ben Eager
Curtis Hamilton / Ryan Martindale / Tyler Pitlick
Scratches: Austin Fyten, Erick Lizon, Cam Abney

Brad Hunt / Potter/Larsen/?
Martin Marincin / Taylor Fedun
Oscar Klefbom / Brandon Davidson
Scratches: Lee Moffie, Joey Leach

Bachman/Roy

Having one of Lander or Arco in OKC would be pretty huge, but I think both of them will probably get the call up so good for them. Would like to maybe see one more veteran bottom 6 center get signed, especially if Pitlick and Martindale don't show some serious improvement in camp and in the preseason.

The defense is looking pretty outstanding which is a nice change from the last few years. I'm assuming that we don't get both Potter and Larsen, but they are (I think) the 8th and 9th guys on the EDM depth chart, so unless the Oil's going to carry 8 D I'm guessing one will have to go? I'm also assuming both of them are behind Belov and Grebeshkov on the depth chart, is that accurate?

I'll say this right now, play Klefbom and Marincin as your top pairing. Marincin already has top pairing experience from last season, and Klefbom can handle it after years in the SEL.

We're grooming these players as top pairing hopefuls, so that is where they should play. Fedun and Davidson should make for a good 2nd pairing.

I think it's pretty much a guarantee that the Oilers will have 8 dmen on the roster to start out. They'll probably carry 13 forwards until they figure out which of those 8D are the best fit on the team.

Marincin and Klefbom both play LD. Barons should have 2 solid pairings next season.

Wasn't MacT saying how they want to tweak the development with OKC, to focus more of prospect development instead of winning? I seem to recall something like that, which makes me wonder if we see Pitlick/Martindale/Hamilton get a push.

Relooked the Barons lineup today given the cuts coming out of Oilers camp. My best guess:

Linus Omark / Anton Lander / Mattew Ford
Derek Nesbitt / Andrew Miller / Ryan Jones
Austin Fyten / CJ Stretch / Tyler Pitlick
Ryan Martindale / Nicholas Tremblay / Erick Lizon
Ewanyk, Kessy, Hamilton

Brad Hunt / Corey Potter (or Larsen? Grebs?)
Martin Marincin / Taylor Fedun
Oscar Klefbom / Brandon Davidson
Leach

Richard Bachman
Ty Rimmer

Top 3 lines look very good. Third line especially looks great for the AHL; good shooters, good skaters, good hitters. The defense looks about as good as you'll see in the AHL, I'd guess all three pairings will see about equal ice time with Klefbom/Davidson being sheltered a bit.

I would think the Oilers would want some veteran bodies to come in and then play Ewanyk and Kessy in the ECHL so maybe there are some more signings still to come. Forward depth will look a lot better if/when Acton or Arcobello come down after Gagner/RNH get back.

No way Potter plays ahead of Marincin. and Klefbom will be in the top 4, if not the top pairing. He's the best pure defender on that team by far.

I wouldn't count on any of those guys soon. We'll be doing some funny accounting to make sure all are up with the team to start the year. I.E. IR.

Klefbom sounding like hes having a solid camp

Quote:
scar Klefbom, Martin Marincin, Martin Gernat, David Musil, Brandon Davidson, and in a much more minor way, Joey Leach – all feel like the All-Star’s of camp, and deservedly so. The Oilers have been super rotten in previous years when it came to farming solid defensemen. We have finally hit a spot in the draft cycle where some really good prospects are now developing professionaly, and right before our eyes.

Oscar Klefbom, the shiniest piece of defending in three days of camp, has been asked to shoulder the load in the split squad scrimmages. Team Navy only features one other Oilers defensive prospect, and that is Brandon Davidson. The others are a mishmash of CHL, ECHL, and collegiate players – who when paired next to Klefbom seem a smidge smurfy. Good, but smurfy.

For obvious reasons, Davidson and Klefbom look solid playing alongside each other. However, we often got Klefbom and Davidson playing away from each other, and it was interesting to watch the gap in talent between themselves and their odd partner.
Neal ‏@tweetneal 6h
Klefbom just handled the puck from blue line to blue line. No one came close to disturbing the puck on his stick. #OKCBarons

Neal ‏@tweetneal 23 Sep
Klefbom was easily the smoothest skating defenseman in camp, day one. He moves laterally very well. #OKCBarons.

Quote:
Two defensive pairings caught my eye during scrimmage. The first pairing was Martin Marincin and Martin Gernat, our two Martys — they are like two peas in a pod — tall, thin and very similar. Jim Byers called them “Slovakian doppelgangers” today — which is an accurate term for these two — and boy, oh, boy are they fun to watch. The second pairing is Brandon Davidson and Oscar Klefbom — I’m very familiar with Davidson from last season and spent far more time watching Klefbom who is a very impressive defenseman. He’s a tall, rangy d-man who does a lot of things very well.

Comparing the two Martin's like that is a shot to Marincin at this point isn't it? Then again Gernat might be a lot more comfortable in the AHL.
