I think Fortunus is going to be the Texas Stars captain again this season. He is behind about 5 guys for callups so don't expect him to be in the NHL.

Really, do you want more enforcers who has less talent than many listed here?

As far as the list goes, I think many of these players will have to go for Professional tryouts at the AHL level for a shot in the NHL. Very unfortunate the lockout shunned them.

Thanks again for all help!
Most of these are answered in the first post of the free agent thread (where I've merged this post). Everyone else can easily be found on Elite Prospects.

I'm surprised Huskins hasn't signed/not even a PTO. I thought he looked decent with both Philly and Detroit last season, and he's a former Cup winner. At least PTO worthy unless he's looking for a guaranteed deal.

I wonder if the Flyers are keeping him on a short leash in case they move a D or 2.

McIver - now there's a name I haven't seen in a while.

Depth chart is now jam packed, as is their cap.

If the Hurricanes want Rovere to play in the NHL, the Hurricanes must rip up his AHL contract (IF he signs) and then sign him to a 2 way deal. I think this procedure is really stupid since any AHLer can potentially play in the NHL.

http://theahl.com/faq-p137653

SPC = Standard players' contract (also known as an "AHL contract")
PTO = Professional try-out contract
ATO = Amateur try-out contract

AHL players not signed to one of these three contracts are on NHL contracts and assigned to their respective AHL clubs by their parent team.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hockey_contracts

Standard Player Contract

AHL/ECHL

This is the what a player signs to lay out the terms of their playing status and salary. This is not transferable to the NHL and would require the player to sign a new contract with the NHL team.

Eric Belanger, who signed in the KHL this past summer, has left the KHL and decided to retire, per Renaud Lavoie.

Could have sworn he retired a couple years ago.

Two UFAs who were on NHL deals last season have signed minor league deals.

Stefan Schneider, who played last season for Chicago of the AHL while under contract to Vancouver, has signed with Gwinnett of the ECHL.

Colton Gillies, who played last season for Columbus in the NHL, has signed with Rochester of the AHL.

So can Gillies be called up by Buffalo Sabres since Rochester Americans are the affiliate for the Sabres? Or does Columbus Blur Jackets still hold his rights?

No and no. Gillies rights are not held by any team. If the Sabres want to call him up, he must be signed to an NHL contract first.

Are Greg Zanon and Patrick Rissmiller still free agents or playing anywhere? I think Zanon was last part of the Avalanche organization and Rissmiller last played for the Sharks in the NHL and for Rochester in the AHL.

Tim Connolly apparently didn't handle his demotion to the AHL very well last year, and thus didn't really appeal to teams upon becoming a UFA/they don't really know what he's still capable of.
No word at all has come out of his camp this summer as far as I know.

Zanon took a try-out with San Antonio of the AHL. No idea how that went or is going.

Patrick Rissmiller hasn't been on an NHL contract since 2011-12, and spent last year between Worcester and Rochester of the AHL. No word from his camp either.

Does anyone know approximately when the Professional Tryout contracts are given out in an AHL season? Also, are PTOs still 25 games in length?

With all those names on the UFA list still, who is Europe bound? Thinking of names like Gagne, Whitney, etc. I guess Prospal and the older guys are about to retire (if they haven't already)

Since more career AHLers are getting released, there may be room for NHL vets to sign AHL Professional TryOut contracts.
