Good to hear. Callahan already got cleared for contact, too.

Callahan got cleared for contact but they are being very careful with him.

But asked if that meant Callahan might be available for season opener Oct. 3, Vigneault said. "No, no, no."

Good. Callahan needs to wait till he is fully healed before coming back.

If he's been cleared for contact he's already fully healed. Perhaps his strength and/or conditioning have a ways to go, but the doctors have apparently determined that he is no longer at risk of re-injuring his shoulder. Otherwise they wouldn't let him get involved in physical contact.

Good by AV to stop Cally from killing himself

I think hagelin will be placed on LTIR anyway which means his first game would be october 29th vs the isles at coliseum. Thats a month away, sounds perfect.

I think though Cally was cleared for contact, he still needs to weeks to make sure he is good to go, and will make his debut in game 4 or 5 against the ducks or blues.

How were injuries on the defense under tortorella in new york? because under AV, the injuries to defense were often and severe, even to previous "ironmen" (hamhuis, ballard)

Staal is the only one has missed significant time (concussion, eye).

Agreed, we need him as healthy as possible at the end of the season and playoffs. No reason to kill yourself to come back so quickly only to re-tweak something.

Take your time, condition yourself and come back at 100%. It is best for him and the team to wait it out.

Carl Hagelin won’t be eligible to make his season debut until the Rangers’ 11th game on Oct. 29 at Nassau Coliseum, against the Islanders, after being placed on long term injury reserve Monday in conjunction with the submission of the club’s 2013-14 roster.

But the news is better concerning Ryan Callahan, the Blueshirts’ other winger with a wounded wing, who was put on injured reserve and thus will be eligible to play as soon as he is deemed fit by the medical and training staff.

The captain has been ruled out of Thursday night’s opener in Phoenix, but may be able to play as soon as next week’s California Tour when the Blueshirts will be in L.A. on Monday, San Jose on Tuesday and Anaheim on Oct. 10.

Hagelin and Callahan both underwent surgeries to repair damaged labrums immediately following the Rangers’ second-round elimination by the Bruins. The surgery on Hagelin was more complex than the one on Callahan. Thus, the longer recovery time.

Hagelin isn't eligible to come off long-term IR until October 29.

Good news on Callahan. The team looked lethargic during the exhibition schedule, and Callahan can only help in that respect.

Recovery from a labrum tear surgery is three-pronged.

1. With time, the cartilage is fully healed and has fully reattached to the bone. The anchors have fully dissolved. The shoulder can withstand contact without fear of slippage or dislocation. Usually 3-6 months post-op. This is where Callahan and Hagelin are today.

2. With PT, scar tissue is minimized and the shoulder regains full range of motion. This can take anywhere from 1 month to 1 year post-op depending on the extent of damage, the style of PT, and the type of patient.

3. With strength training, patient regains full strength in the bicep, tricep, and deltoid. This can take anywhere from 6-12 months post-op.

Yeah but that's without the aid of "modern sports medicine" (HGH and steroids and rehabbing like it's your job, because it is)

also Callahan didn't practice in a contract jersey today, dunno if that's a bad sign

@KatieStrangESPN: #NYR Callahan said yellow jersey was for drill purposes only and that he remains cleared for contact "same as always"

However, he said Thursday is still probably a "no-go"

Cally will be a big boost this team plays way different when he is out, generally much worse.

I'd take Pyatt over Miller pretty easily right now.

They're something like 20-26-2 since 2011 without Cally, and 1-4 in the playoffs.

Best be careful, there are a select few players to whom it is very uncool to heap praise upon.

For a player who was drafted to play an honest, simple game, Miller channels to much Zherdev out there at times.
