Toughness is important, but you can get that from people with actual hockey skill.

Who is Detroit's goon? Pittsburgh's? Chicago's?

Teams like Toronto and the Flyers have goons. You know what else is similar about them? No Cups since black and white TV still existed.
We definitely need a skill player for that 13th spot. Because Hartnell, Schenn, Read, Giroux, Voracek, Simmonds, Lecavalier, Couturier, Laughton, and Talbot is not enough talent. Give me a break. You might have an argument if the Flyers weren't loaded with offensive talent.

So loaded with talent they were among the league leaders in goals scored last year ... oh wait, no they weren't.

Flyers are the league leaders in offensive hype. The talent remains to be seen.

When you can't start breakouts effectively it kills your ES scoring.

Which has nothing to do with who is the 12th forward. Literally nothing.

Do you really not understand that the mindset is the problem? The mindset that leads to terrible 4th line forward selections also leads to bad defensemen selections, with "toughness" overvalued over puck skills and positional understanding.

That's nonsense. Kimmo, Mez, Coburn and Streit weren't brought in for their toughness. There's only one tough defenseman on the team with poor puck skills - Grossmann. The rest of them are more than capable, they just aren't being given an effective system to work with.

You are inventing a pattern where it doesn't exist.

You know what fills the seats more? Winning. Winning is the end all be all, and winning that big shiny trophy at the end of the year will always pack the house more than some reincarnated Dave Schultz types. I'm more than ready for the Flyers to forget about the BSB legacy and start focusing on what wins in 2013. If that means no more Shelley/Rosehill types, then so be it.

Hmm. Amending. 6-4, JVR and Lupul score 2 goals apiece because they're ex Flyers.

TSN has the Flyers 13th in their Power Rankings

As always, goaltending is a concern in Philadelphia, but if Ray Emery and/or Steve Mason can somehow solve the issue, the Flyers have lots of talent up front and should at least be better in the short-term on the blueline with the addition of veteran Mark Streit.
Key Injuries: None.

The biggest draw in Hockey were the Philadelphia flyers back in their " Broadstreet bully days " And i am not saying that a team full of nothing but goons would be a big attraction or put more people in the seats, i am simply saying that a nice mix of talent and toughness is very marketable .

The Flyers have not even been remotely close over the last 25yrs in any way to the BSB teams of the 70s , those who think that have no clue what the 70s teams were really like. Those teams were a nice mix of talent, toughness, and sheer violence when needed. Best entertainment for the dollar back in those days.

I'm well aware of that, but it's dumb to say those teams were more popular for their fighting than they were for their two Stanley Cups.

We were 9th out of 30 teams in goals scored a game during an OFF YEAR. While also having the #3 power play in the league.

You're obviously angry about the team but it's misguided and clouding your judgement.

Just ignore guys like that. Just looking to take negatives out of everything. "Flyers still stuck in the 70s!!!11!!!". ********, 3/4 of teams in league have an enforcer. You really do need one on your roster. Stop with the Flyers are stuck in the BSB ********, its really annoying and not valid, like one bit.

Completely irrelevant for today's discussion. But what you describe was the evolution of the Flyers "brand". That brand has creeped it's way into modern day Flyers even though the game and team are wildly different. Fortunately, filling seats is never an issue because of this "brand" despite them losing or having some ugly years.

I wish Lavi was more like John Tortorella, bench the players that don't put effort into scoring that puts the scare into players.
