I don't see Gill not being signed as the 7th defenseman, so we'd end up with a depth chart like this:

Timonen
Coburn
Schenn
Streit
Grossmann
Gustafsson
Gill
Hunwick

With Pronger and Bourdon on LTIR and Gervais already waived. I don't see the Flyers keeping 8 defensemen on the roster, especially since Rosehill can fill in on D should disaster ever strike.
Hunwick likely finds his way to the AHL before the season's out in Colorado anyway I think.

Well, as the season progresses and defensemen get injured or prove unworthy of a spot on the NHL roster, people will start to claim guys, but Hunwick would be buried even more deeply in Philly than in Colorado. That being said, the Flyers operate with 1-2 defensemen out half the time, anyway.

I am not saying it should or would ever happen, but if he was in the starting 20 and a d-man went down in-game, I'd rather have Rosehill at 6th d-man and roll with a short bench of forwards than have 5 d-men. In essence, Rosehill is like having a 14th forward and 8th d-man in one.

I think this deal will happen, but it will happen after a couple games when Roy/sakic realizes that our D isn't good enough

Would fit a need for both teams so I can see a deal happening here.

That's a good one......who knows...she's Canadian, maybe she can still skate. She'd probably have more endurance than Mez, even at her advanced age!

I believe Roy already said there wouldn't be any trades yet. He wants to give the guys they have a chance to perform. He also said that a lot of teams in cap trouble are trying to dump players with bad contracts on teams with cap space and that the Avs wouldn't bite.

Not saying things wont change once he sees our defense but thats where I think the Avs stand atm

I agree, but I'm hoping we land Coburn

Would Mitchell be an upgrade over Talbot on the 3rd line LW spot?

Point production-wise, I would guess yes.

Who would take Mitchell's spot? Malone?

Roy clearly likes Mitchell a lot more then Malone based on how things have played out. At this point I'll trust his judgment and like that we have him centering our 4th line as he is the best option.

Not sure why Avs fans don't like him, but he was a good pickup and played decent enough for being under Sacco's system. Would like to see how he does in a real system.

Also, Mez would be fine if he was healthy - but he isn't. Roy knows better than to take a D man they are desperately trying to offload because there is a reason they are desperate to offload him.

At the moment, Mezsaros is healthy.

The reason the Flyers would move him is fairly simple--his salary and cap are out of line with the role he can play in Philadelphia. He's 6th on the depth chart behind Timonen, Coburn, Streit, L. Schenn, and Grossmann. In a cap era, it's tricky to have you 6th defenseman carrying a $4.0 hit (the $5.5 in real salary isn't really the issue).

In Colorado, he'd have the opportunity to play a top-4 role. If he stays healthy, its a pretty easy win for the Avs, since a healthy Mezsaros is pretty easily > John Mitchell.

Whether he will stay healthy--either in PHI or COL--is anyone's guess.

It's really not that Avs fans don't like Mitchell, it's that he's expendable. He's not in our top 9, though he could fill in there in a pinch. He's not a defensive specialist, though he's not a liability. He's not a great offensive player, even if he has 1 shift per game when he's amazing. Basically, he's a decent player who doesn't really excel at anything or have glaring weaknesses. And, being the 4C, he's not going to be playing many minutes. So, replacing him with a guy like Olver isn't going to hurt the team very much, even if Mitchell is the better player.

Personally, I'd be trying to pick up Mez for a draft pick, but if Mitchell is the price Philly wants, I'd make the trade.

Not sure why Meszaros is so unwanted. If you've got the space, he's a very decent player.

I didn't want Liles, but Meszaros with just one year left makes something like this look pretty good.
And if we could unload Hunwick with him as well, even better.

honestly i feel the Avs will land Mez, just not now. Maybe more so into the season when Roy sees his D needs help.

I don't really want to get rid of Mez, but the Flyers have two major needs and one minor need right now:

MAJOR
1) top-pairing defenseman (Mez is not this and won't be this; nor would he be a viable piece in a deal for one)

2) goaltending (I am giving Mason and Emery the benefit of the doubt, but I naturally would want to upgrade if possible; P.S. I miss Bobrovsky)

MINOR
3) 3rd line LW

Mez makes too much money and takes up too much cap space to be a #4-5 defenseman. With Gill around and Gervais waived, we have 8 guys. Plus, this forward corps looks pretty badass:

Hartnell-Giroux-Voracek
B. Schenn-Lecavalier-Simmonds
Mitchell-Couturier-Read
Talbot-Laughton-Hall
Rinaldo, Rosehill (but whatever, they don't count)

I'd prefer to fill up the space and then trade to acquire another, healthier defenseman during the season. Or bank the money to see about a goaltender if both Mason and Emery crap the bed.

how is a 3rd or 4th round pick expensive? mez's contract expires after this season so i don't see him as expensive at all.
