Who was the second guy to touch the cup this year? I have zero problems with Gill being that guy for us

Why would hainsey want to come here for #5/#6 minutes and likely no or little PP time (Kimmo, Streit, Read, Voracek, Giroux, Simmonds, Hartnell, Coots, Schenn, Vinny)?

The guy is playing for a long term deal next season and with Pitkanen out he will get top pairing minutes.

Not sure if serious...He was waiting for a job up until a week before training camp and "coincidentally" it was termed then that Pitkanen was done. He could of signed here a while before when he had NO other options. Its not like hes a powerplay guy anyway.

Meltzer today made a reference to him as being a good locker room guy (veteran presence) and taking on the role that Knuble had last year apparently. We had Cote and then Shelley for locker room presence now we have this big oaf. At least it's for a year...700k is not to bad as an insurance policy. Obviously he is just a big body though and even at 1 yr and 700K I wonder about his true added value...

If anyone is surprised by this I don't know what to say. It's been speculated for weeks now. He's the 8th and obviously the Flyers management feels more comfortable with him than any of our young defenseman in the system if Gus struggles. If he struggles mightily during the year he can be waived and sent to the A. This isn't a big deal signing. Just extra depth. I actually see nothing wrong with it. There isn't much else out there anyways

VOORHEES, N.J. – When the Flyers released their opening night roster yesterday, it was noticeably light with only 21 players listed.

Teams are allowed to carry 23 players on their roster at any one time, so there appeared to be some certainty that they would make another roster move or two before opening night.

And that happened Tuesday.

The Flyers signed defenseman Hal Gill to a one-year contract worth $700,000, making him the eighth defenseman on the roster.

They also recalled forward Adam Hall from the Phantoms, making him the 13th forward.

Gill’s signing is the most interesting news though.

In camp on a professional tryout contract, Gill, 38, impressed the Flyers enough to beat out Bruno Gervais and Oliver Lauridsen for a roster spot.

This leaves the Flyers with a glut of NHL defensemen, as most teams carry seven, not eight rearguards, which means the situation could change in the near future.

However, it puts the Flyers in a more comfortable position defensively from a depth perspective than it’s been in the past.
Quote:
As for Gill, he was considered a long shot when he was brought into camp, as the Flyers didn’t appear to have room for him, but he was able to win a job using his veteran guile.

Gill is positionally sound and is able to smartly force rushing forwards to the outside into lower percentage areas. He also is a big-bodied, net-front presence who can clear the line of sight for the goalies and isn’t afraid to put his 6-foot, 8-inch frame in front of oncoming shots.

Does anyone on the Flyers front office realize that for this year's rodeo, they need more horses and fewer barrels?

Gill can always be sent down without effecting the Cap... only real concern with signing him as I see it is using a Contract Slot, but that can always be addressed is and when it needs to be... This is a one year deal that IMO has been deemed necessary by the number of Back-Line injuries lasts season, and the injury history of some of the D-men now on the roster... and the amount of Concussions and PCS currently occurring in the NHL/Sports and the carefulness allotted them in getting players back on the ice.

Problem with Gill and the rest of the D as Meltzer pointed out is that despite their price tag as a group....it is questionable if the pieces assembled are the correct mix to form a cohesive group to fit Lavi's system. Gill is insurance but just as a warm body. On the ice he'll be more a detriment than not..so again the added value is nil with Gill or minimal...

Ehh I'd rather have signed Gill for that price then for Holmgren to waste a pick getting someone of similar quality. Worst case scenario he ends up as a mentor for the prospects in Adirondack.

Grossmann looked dazed after that hit he took in their last preseason game. I'm surprised they let him continue playing, especially for a guy that has a history of concussions.

Anyway, this seems like no big deal. They obviously prefer Gill over Lauridsen and maybe Gervais, too. I fully expect him to play this year, as it wouldn't be a Flyers season without loads of injuries.

Also this gives Homer more flexibility in both dealing away a D-man during the season as well as replacing D-men in accordance to their style... with a PMD and a SAHD ready to be plugged in without having to be brought up from ADK... and Gill being a veteran of many years is a plus, as such Farm guys would be raw.

They really should have. For what he is, I thought he played pretty well last year. Much better than Gill, in my opinion.

Did he fully recover from his concussion? I don't think he's playing anywhere this year.

I forgot about Huskins. If he didn't have his concussion, I would of loved to give him another shot instead of Gill.
