Look at the bright side ...Holmgren learned something from the Lilja acquisition....give a body ..albeit a bigger one a 1 year contract instead of 2!

Again..to me this move does nothing on the ice. It's just throwing away 700k...even if it sounds like chump change

this is the point I am making, you waste a contract and 700k. something that could be usefull at the deadline. People say they can just bury Gill in the minors. That doesnt make the contract go away.
Gill is just like Gervais only bigger. he sucks but is fine as the 7th defenseman. why bring him in? just makes zero sense.

Years don't see Gill as being better than Gervias. And seriously the Gill we currently see.. Is he seriously better than Laurdisen, Manning or even the younger ones like Alt? Alt is looking great for the Phantoms right now. Shame he won't get a better chance. Only way is if Gill plays like Foster did and plays so bad Lavy and Homer are forced not to play him.

I think they are @ 49 contracts. I don't think its as dire of a situation as you are making it be.

Let Alt get comfortable with the Pros in the AHL. This team has enough players learning on the job.

I have to believe that a trade is coming if Gil was signed. The Flyers defense is now:

Timonen-Schenn
Streit-Coburn
Grossmann-Mez/Gus
Mez/Gus
(Gil/Gervais in ADK)

There just isn't enough room to have all these guys in the organization, is there? What does the ADK defense look like?

Gervais-Gil
Alt-Konan
Lauridsen-Lamarche
Manning

Something like that? I guess that isn't too bad. I'm not too worried about the contract limit. We are at 49 right now if my calculations are accurate. I doubt the Flyers will be obtaining two players without anyone else going the other way.

It has to be a security blanket for Gus if he continues to struggle with his game. Also, they might not be too happy with the play of our ahlers right now and feel they need more seasoning. I can see why this move was made, injuries killed us last year, and are bound to happen again. Gervais was just dreadful too, I would prefer gill to him.

As for the deadline, the team needs to be a playoff contender in order for us to worry about that down the road. 3.7 is still a significant amount of space, and other transactions can be done by March. Yes, Gill is taking a contract spot up, but it's not the end of the world or even our cap situation. I'm sure the Flyers management is more worried about making the team a contender right now than what they are going to do at the deadline. I'm not saying they aren't thinking ahead that far, but priority is making this team get to the playoffs. Gill gives them extra depth who can step in for a few games and you know exactly what he is giving you. You can't say that about any players in our system right now

I think he is better than all you listed but Alt. A 7th guy that is a PK specialist isn't the worst option. I want to give Alt full year in AHL as he has def. intrigued me this year and would like to see him get a full year of top 4 in the A.

You are damn right. You have Gervais already on this team. He is a depth guy/7th defenseman. Gervais sucks but hes fine as the 7th guy. Why bring in a guy who is worse then him as the 8th defeseman who sucks even worse and is wasting a contract.
Here is an idea if you need a 8th defenseman in case of injury.
CALL SOMEONE UP. It is allowed in the NHL.

Meh. Expected and I don't mind it.

I'd rather the young guys play 20 minutes in the AHL than sit in the press box or play 10 minutes in the NHL. Grossmann and Mezsaros will undoubtedly get injured and I'd rather Gill replace their PK minutes than Gervais.

At least it wasn't a three year contract, right?

They want to have four pairs of defensemen on the NHL team before someone gets injured.

Gervais should be in the AHL playing 20 minutes a night unless two regulars get hurt.

They are well aware of calling up the 'kids' on defense, as they had to go that route last season... You remember last season and how that turned out, don't you?... This to me is a way of having Back-Line depth while allowing the kids on the Farm to mature... and use them if and when they are ready.

If one of the young Farmhands is deemed ready then there is nothing preventing Homer of sending down Gill -- at no Cap cost whatsoever -- and promoting him.

What's the big deal; really?

I wouldnt be shocked if Holmgren gave Gill assurances he wouldnt be sent down to the AHL. Again. they had Gervais. if they needed a 8th guy then you call someone up. isnt this what just about everyone else does?
I feel I am just beating a dead horse now with my feelings on this. I dont like it at all. if some of you do then thats fine.

I'd rather see Gill on the ice over Gervais, he may be slow but he CAN play D better than Gervais.

Don't mind the signing. It's really not a big deal.

The benefit of having Gill as the 7th defenseman over Gervais is that it'd be nice to have a 7th defenseman who can actually play defense.

Gill is a solid vet presence in the room, but basically an insurance policy against Grossmann getting hurt again. Nothing more, nothing less.

As long as this means Lauridsen doesn't ever touch the ice again I am happy with it.

This is fine on its own, but shows why you don't sign guys like Gervais, Lilja to more than one year deals.

Theres really no reason to have both Gill and Gervais on this roster other than the fact that Gervais turned out to be atrocious

It's only one year.

That's the only positive thing about this. This is another guy who's basically useless. Gill is as poorly suited for a Lavi-coached team as a player gets.

Yes, but Holmgren needed to fill the void in the locker room that Shelley left when he retired. Who else is going to to make the guys laugh?
