What has he done to deserve 8 million? Seems way too much to me.

Anyways, fair deal. By no means a bargain (I laughed at the earlier link comparing him to "adjusted" cap-circumventing contracts from the last CBA).. and by no means an overpayment.

If I'm Kessel, I would have been looking at less years so I can make sure to cash in again on my next deal but is what it is.

Good contract, pretty standard it seems with the new CBA.

Might (and probably will) suck towards the end, but that's to be expected with these 8-year contracts.

Different CBA. Crosby's $8.7 is worth different now than when it was signed.

What I find funny is that people think Hall, Eberle, RNH and quite possibly Yakupov at 6m a year is overpayment when players like Kessel get 8m a year and they produce about the same as the 4 above in points. Not knocking Kessel or the team, more just pointing out that the Oilers players are not overpaid, just like Kessel isn't overpaid based on how the Leafs fans put it. Each player has their own value. Good for the Leafs to lock up their best player since Sundin.

Leafs didn't really have much choice.

Kessel is pretty consistent and he can run his own line, which puts him up there as one of the elite wingers in the league.

Not bad - but these long terms are always a little bit risky.

Top ten league points scorer two years running? One of the most prolific goal scorers of the past 8 years?

Doubt he can reach those records, but he'll certainly put out similar production annually.

I am just glad that the Leafs were able to lock Phil up for 8 more years. Without him, our team doesn't look that great.

Is it a bargain deal? hell no. He got paid at fair market value.

UFA vs RFA

Your kids are still overpaid but I don't blame the oilers for doing it. It makes sense for them

Probably not.

Years 7-8 is more likely. We'll see though, could be fine. I think he'll be 34 when it ends? He may not be one the decline yet.

Happy to see Kessel is sticking around. Heck of a player and the Leafs' offensive catalyst for sure.

An 8 million dollar cap hit might be a little high right now, but not that bad. Probably about (or a little less than) what he would've gotten in free agency so it's probably fair without the hometown discount at this point in time.

Anyway though, it's good to have this done. Would've hated to see the Leafs lose Kessel for nothing.

He will only be 34 when the contract is up. Players like Kessel (not very physical) generally tend to produce till their late 30's. Given the rise in cap in 8 years, this deal will still be well worth it.

Ok. Just make sure to paste that into every player signing that is longer than 5 years.

Back to back ppg seasons. Four straight 30 goal (20 in 48 games in 12/13 makes five) seasons before the age of 26 seems about right.

Yea, it's like he's finished top 10 in points the past 2 season, or top 7 in goals the past 3 season. He hasn't done any of those, he's terrible.

i'm dumbfounded that people still don't understand the difference between contracts signed prior to new CBA and post new CBA. Crosby's actual dollars are $12M per
