I think this is a pretty fair deal for both the Leafs and Kessel. $8M for 8 years is the price to sign star players these days. Kessel has been a 0.9ppg player since comeing to the Leafs 4 years ago and been a tad over 1.0ppg the last two years. He's a difference maker and good for the Leafs to lock him up long term.

Kessel was a must sign to keep Toronto competitive. Good signing. Also means they won't have to buy-out Bozak.

Good for Kessel and the leafs. It's no bargain but it's a fair deal.

The only 3 players to have scored more goals than Kessel over the past 3 years: Stamkos, Perry, Ovechkin.

But how many of Kessel's goals had intangibles attached to them. And did he look wierd after he scored them.

Good fair deal, anyone saying other wise is their any other option? What should be do trade him to another team for a ****** package like Kovalchuk and Hossa got and watch him sign for the same amount with that team and that team being praised for it? Or should we give him up for free and tank? Which one HF?

In my opinion it is 1.5mil overpayment by todays dollars. He is worth 6.5 mil for 35 goals a year.

If the cap goes up as it should, and Kessel reaches 40 goals at age 28 to 30 , then the Leafs got their value for him.

Fair deal IMO. He's under contract from age 26-34, maybe the last 2 years will be a drop off but I don't see this being a bad contract by any means. Kessel's legit.

Very fair deal. So happy he signed before the season. Great way to kick things off and hopefully he burns the Habs like he did last year.

Fair deal. He's not being compared to Crosby, Malkin, Stamkos etc. Using recent Semin and Parise for comparables, this deal is fair. Even if both those players perform much better defensively, Kessel's one-dimensional offensive ability is marginally better. And he's a bit tougher.

99% of the time when any player signs a contract... 99% of the fan base is going to hope its a good contract and those of us here are going to try to support 'our team.'

its very very very uncommon to see fan base of any team be against the signing their team makes at the moment its signed

but of course we all know that soon many deals are considered 'bad deals' and the fan base is begging someone to take the mistake off their hands

not to pile on toronto... but john michael liles was signed and at the time i said he is a waiver wire type player... most hometown fans ripped me a new one

i am probably guilty of over valuing my bruins... im not perfect... but i will say im sure as hell glad it wasnt my bruins on the hook to kessel now for 8 mill over the next 8 years...

good luck with that

He also had to take a 1 year deal prior to that, the demand was so low...I don't think there is any question Kessel would have gotten 7 year term if he hit the market, and at top dollar of course.

Yeah seriously.

A lot of Leaf fans offer brutal proposals, but then people turn around and say our star player is overpaid when he's only 26 and getting tons of goals and getting more points every year. Unreal.

Fair deal and just what you have to pay. I mean elite wingers cost money and you can't let your best players walk if you can help it.

For what he can do that's fair money and term. Is a huge threat to score, but showed he can make plays as well. To have him locked up now for the next 9 seasons is pretty comforting.

This one is for you Leaf fans(which I am not one of).

Anyone saying this is a bad deal is flat out wrong. Kessel has been a top 8 scorer in each of the last 2 years. He has also shown signs of getting better and a more complete player. Teams would love to have his scoring abitity on their 1st line. Also, if TO lost him as a UFA, then the trade for him would have been a waste. Now they have him for his entire prime. In 2 years when Kessel is #20 in top salaries, he will look like a bargain.

It's Phil Kessel, he's still a one-dimensional goal scorer, who is a locker room cancer, and doesn't care about winning.

Fair deal. No discount, but on par with what other top scorers were getting.

Well, I agree that the hometown fans always say it's a fair deal. At the same time most fans of other teams say it's a terrible deal. And fans of the team that the player was traded from typically find the deal to be the most outrageous.
I'm not shocked that some Bruin fans don't like the deal just like some Leaf fans didn't like Seguin.

While he might a shred overpaid there is no shame in overpaying for elite talent. You know exactly what you're going to get with Phil.
