Solid deal for both sides. Leafs get their franchise winger for solid money/term, Phil gets paid, both sides should be happy. In a couple years paying phil 1/9th of your total cap isn't that big of a deal. Scorers get paid.

A bit risky with that term and cap hit, but you gotta pay to keep the player and Toronto couldn't afford to lose Kessel.

Deal works for both sides... for now.

The cap is going up. Leafs don't have too much to worry about.

I wonder how the negotiations went? got done pretty quick so I assume Nonis didn't put up much of a fight....
It started a week back when Nonis heard that Kessel was on board to be here long term.

I get that but it seems like Nonis gave Phil what he wanted right away without hesitation...Obviously we don't know what was said behind closed doors.....

I still think its a solid and fair deal....

A very reasonable deal when the Getzlaf and Perry contracts are used as comparisons. Kudos to the Leafs for locking him up.

Man, Kessel is only 25 too. I thought he was older. He's in his prime and will stay that way for just about the entire contract.

I am not sure I understand these attempts to portray Kessel as some sort of softie who totally lacks leadership (and, if anybody here cries about leaf haters on this board, I will come through the terminal and smack you real hard). Kessel was under a microscope when traded. He was moved from one major market to another in a deal that wound up having an exorbitant price tag. He then goes to a bubble team in the most rabid market in hockey. That was one heck of a tough spot to be in for any player and you would need to be one mentally tough SOB to succeed. With that kind pressure on me, I would probably wake up screaming every night!

And, the kid stepped up. He put up elite offensive numbers, and then helped drag a meh team to the playoffs. If that is not grit, leadership, and drive, I don't know what is.

As for the contract, no surprise to me that Kessel took Toronto to the cleaners. He had them by the private parts and squeezed and squeezed. More power to him.

I personally think the contract will likely come back to bite TML in the butt pretty hard, but they did what they had to and they have the guy who is arguably their most important player under contract until the end of his prime years.

Heck, with the way the cap keeps going up, this could still look like a bargain.

Given the stats Kessel has put up, that's a fair contract.

That's a good point if there was a perfect time to give an 8 year contract it would be now..

Great contract for a great player. Seems to be improving as the group of players around him also improves which is a good sign for him to continue getting better.

He turns 26 tomorrow I think, but still a very good point. If you look at the usual age where guys start to be less productive it's right around that 32-34 age range

Is what it is. This is the cost of a PPG 1st line winger. Kessel was also above PPG last season, and is PPG in the playoffs for his career, so he has that going as well. It's a bit long, but hey, that's what it takes to get a player like this. During his last season he'll be 34 years old, so it isn't that bad.

Overall this is a good deal for both sides.

He's worth more than Patrick Kane for at least the first little while, right?

I hope I get as good a birthday present!
By the time 5 or 6 years or so have passed contracts will likely be in the $10 million range for top players so the risk of an 8 year deal is not that big, IMO.
